Diff ratios

Hey All
Just doing some research in preparation for buying my rangie and I was just wanting to know a bit more about replacement Cw&P gears. It looks like most people go for 4.11's but you can get 4.27's, 4.75's etc.
Correct me if Im wrong, but 4.11's will still be a little tall for a rangie which will mean revs at 100km/hr will be lower giving good mileage, but it will mean less power. I am setting the rangie up as a weekend toy so offroad ability is a priority and being in eastern Melbourne its not that far to all the good spots anyway.
So if I am fitting 35's would I be best getting higher ratio gears? This would compensate for not changing the transfer case gears so that low 1st would be lower right?
And can someone clarify something else for me? When people talk about putting in Toyota centres are we talking about the spider gears or the CW&P? And does the Jac Mac 6 pinion carrier replace these parts or am I totally on the wrong line?
Am currently weighing up whether I go through jacmac for diff locks, axles, CW&P or whether I would go through with ARB difflocks, hytuff axles, and ashcroft CW&P. Any comments on which is a better setup? They end up costing about the same...

4.11 and 35's brings it pretty close to standard gearing.

The toy conversion uses hilux diff in the rear and 80 or 100 series cruiser diff in the front, as in the whole centre. So if you bust one you can just pop the centre out and put in another centre.

4.11's match 33's on a Rangie or disco. I'm pretty sure I'd worked out before that 4.3's bring 35's back to standard gearing.

I run 4.75's from great basin rovers in the U.S. great for an
offroader.. I run 35 bfg krawlers...

yep agree with this.
The 4.11's on my disco match the 33's better than the bigger tyres.

You could always save yourself some money and buy my disco. I'ts got just about everything you want for a basher (including a dent in one door
) even if you decide to part it out and use the bits in a rangie shell.
gas injected 4.6
F&R lockers
jacmac axles
4.11's
laminated housing
high mount with 4.6 motor
etc etc
etc

Hmmm... I had really decided on a rangie and plus Im not that tech savvy that I could swap everything over.
What did you want for it? Are you starting something else or just over it?

My driving has changed, as has the family and so I dont use any of it's potential. It has a couple of minor cosmetic blemishes. 1 flare is cracked, it has the infamous roof lining sag and a dent in one door. Mechanically it is excellent. the 4.6 has done about 15 - 20,000 km with oil changes done (mobil synthetic) every 6 - 7 months regardless of distance travelled. the gas was put on it dec 07 and so is just over 12 months old and has under body tanks. I am now in need of something a bit bigger and that is more suited to touring rather than double diff locked & 35 inch land. the last time I drove this thing in anger was setting up for Ateco (july 08).

I've got Toy 4.3:1 with 37s and love it.
Having said that, if I were to do it again I wold probably use 4.56:1 gears instead. Just to get that little bit more punch off the line on road and bit better than stock off-road...but with 37s

Standard 3.54 ratio and it has been running 35's since 1995, 200tdi.
No real performance issues to complain about.

200tdi, 3.54, 35's..... you have to have performance before you have performance issues.

But the 200tdi spits out 120hp at the flywheel and is enough to push the old girl at 150 without any drama's.

If your motor makes enough power you should only need 3.5 gears with 35s anyway.My old slug 318 with a 4 speed was great,any lower diffs than 3.5 would be shite up the bush.I mean how slow do you want to get around. MORE POWER

ah...slow enough to have good control. I don't want to be having to rev the crap out of the engine just to get over things...better gearing, better control.

Well its never great with an auto anyway, but even worse with the standard gearing.
