Temp Problem

Hey all having a problem with my 2.4Lt Diesel Hilux.
Last night I was driving around town when I noticed the Temp Gauge was very high. When I got home I was sitting in the driveway idiling I was checking the Temp and I turned my lights off and after about 15-30 seconds the temp gauge dropped about a 1/4 to normal. I thought that is weired so I turned them back on and after about 15-30 seconds it was back on high again. So then I turned the key off and the ute kept running, then i flicked the lights off and the ute turned off. Turned ute back on and off with no lights on all good. Turned ute back on with lights on and same thing again ute would not turn off straight away. Can anyone help
