ok so me and a few mates are haiving a big debate over which is a better truck.

things started off when me and a mate with a new hilux got bogged last night, and a few other mates that drive cruisers are sayin cuase we drive an hilux cuase why we got bogged.

so i wanna hear what the people on this site have to say about the two breeds.

ok heres one for you, if you take same both year models and have them stock and same tires etc etc, which one will out run the other on a 4wd track.

depends on the track and the driver. as with just about any 4wd. its not a question you will get a clear answer for and i honestly hope your not actualy expecting one

well forget about driver atm, im just focsing on the two cars atm. its a big thing in weipa here about hilux's and cruisers and alot of people here have never been out 4wding are just getting on my nerves givin me heaps for driving a hilux, i just want to see what the (real world) has to say about these two breads.

and lets just say they both go on all different types of trakcs mostly muddy ones as gettin bogged is a big one up here.

Dont let them get on your nerves. Seriously, all that counts is that you are happy with what you drive, and you have fun!!!
Friendly rivalry is normal, and a bit of fun. If these people are genuinly insulting you and your vehicle, ignore them, they're tools.

That said:
I am contiuously surprised at what a stock standard 4/5 th gen Hilux with highway tyres can do if the driver gives it a good go.
I have very little to do with land cruisers.

It really depends on what models you are talking about
for example are you talking about 75 series 79 series 80 series or 100series ifs

then with hiluxes are you talking new generation (d4d style) or ifs or live front axle

it also depends on the terrain

so being from weipa i will assume you are talking about a 75 series and a live front axle hilux say both of 1995 vintage both diesel

in my opinion and thats all this is
the hilux will be better on flat really soft mud as it is a lot lighter and tip toes over the top and does not sink in as easily as the much heavier cruiser and the high clearance helps as well

but if there is uneven ground or rocks the cruisers extra weight, flex, lower center of gravity and power helps get you thru

comfort i think the cruiser is better on corrigations and does not bounce as much as the light weight hilux

I pondered this question a lot i had two trucks a 80 series and a 1980 hilux

the hilux was way better in the mud light weight and easy to through around bouncing off this and that
also muddy descents the hilux was way superior more controllable due to its almost half the weight of the other truck

the cruiser was far better at crawling over stuff with heaps more flex no bouncing breesing thru stuff would cruise nicely over corrugations but heavy and would bog deep when in soft mud

that when i thought imagine a light 80 series with more power it would be able to tip toe over stuff light weight and flex with coil springs etc

so i started with this (80 series chasis) best toyota chssis
Image

then got this (2jz twin turbo from a supra) most powerful standard toyota engine
Image

then put this on top (rn46 hilux cab) lightest ever body

and ended up with this

cheers

Yeah give us two models to compare, are you talking both utes? are you talking 80 series wagon and good ol ln 106 ute?

either way all of their lsds suck  damn it!

My mate has a solid axel petrol 100 series on 33's with 2 inch lift, when i had a stock single cab leaf hilux, he walked all over me pretty much everywhere. in the mud his truck was better but i put that mainly down to my terrible tyres, on hill climbs when there was traction he could re accelerate but i couldnt just not enough power, on rocky stuff i just couldnt creep cause i couldnt keep my wheels on the ground, whilst his flexed very well.

so basically hands down his truck walked all over mine, but he had 2 inch taller suspension so more than normal flex and he had bigger and better tyres.

I have now learnt to drive better as well, and new rear suspension has at least doubled my flex. by the time the front is done and i put my 33 muddies on, I think we will be on a more comparable playing field. both cars on 33's both cars with about 2 inch lift.

Already my car is far more capable with just that bit of extra flex in the rear - they are so stiff.

as mentioned luxes are lighter but pretty under powered - that said now mine is turboed its fine.

Plus my car has higher sills and less panels - his gets damaged on stuff i dont even think about.

Both cars in that comparison are very capable with slight mods - but off the shelf i would expect to get much further in a flexy coil wagon wether it be 80 or 100 series.

the you also have 4runners and surfs, both of which are hilux's... the wagon body gives them more wieght so it doesnt bounce around as much, and the 5-link coil rear gives it more flex... still not as heavy as a cruiser, but better suspension than a hilux ute.

then you have a landcruiser bundera, which sits on hilux running gear and suspension...

then the landcruiser prado, probably best comparo between a cruiser and lux would be between the 90 series prado and the 3rd gen surfs. one supersedes the other. (the kzn185 surf has the same engine, running gear and chassis as the 90 series prado).

BUT surf and forerunner have IFS and dont felx well without a lot of work. Again cruiser is gonna crawl easily where surfs struggle with no flex or low ground clearance.
Surfs and hilux sometimes have the advantage of being smaller for tight spots.

Horses for courses.

wheel the piss out of whatever you got  if you have fun doing it who cares what people think of your car.

BUT 105 and 200 series, and prados also have ifs!

and a surf with 35's offers the same clearance as a cruiser with 38's, due to everything being tucked up higher... and the front dif will almost always sit higher.

but yes, whatever you drive, who gives a fark what others think? just aslong as your having fun driving it!

I wanna see a 100, 80, or 60 cruiser do some hardcore rock stuff... I'm yet to see it.

Pick-ups go harder

We're in Australia, Luke. We don't have "pickups" here. We have "utes" instead. ;)

Both really do serve 2 different purposes. Only similarities being that they are both Toyota, and both 4x4.

Would i want to go around Aus in a hilux? NO

Would i want to (try) stick a Tonne of manure in the back of a cruiser? NO

Personally i drive a 105 cruiser (solid axles, coil springs, 4.2 TD). In my opinion the flex, comfort and low down torque put it above the Hilux. In stock form Hilux's dont flex.

ill second that, but most people will lift a cruiser to save their sills further improve it etc, so if your going to change suspension in both cars the hiluxs can work fairly well, but not the same as the coils.

I wonder how many people actually go 4wding in a complete stocker? and i mean driving with the intent of going somewhere which forces you to drive a higher vehicle with low range and 4wd, not reaching for the transfer so you can back your boat up around the side of your house on the grass in north sydney etc etc.

Hmm 100 series ------>This year's TTC.

80 series----> I don't really think this needs an example but Gigantor leaps to mind.

60 Series-----> Are you for real? Plenty of people have run 60 crawlers.

You may well be "yet to see it", but I'm willing you're yet to see lot's of things. For example, a blue car, a riced up civic, a squidly motorbike rider, an inept taxi driver. These are all easily as rare as hardcore cruisers.

75 series with coils   and nissan diffs

seriously though, it all comes down to what you are used to and how you drive, there have been plently of times ive driven straight up something my mate in his lux couldnt even look at and vice versa. if you can drive, it doesnt matter what youre in, youll get where you want to go. and as long its not a nissan youll be fine. :finger:
