1kd Questions!

Hey all
Just a few questions about the 1kd-ftv motor (d4d) found in the Prado.
From personal experience preferrably, whats your opinion on this motor? And is there any well known common problems thta have occured with them?
I believe the prado is availabale with the 1kdfte and the A750F 5 speed auto - the same gearbox i have in my FJC.
Has anybody done any more work to get substantial power/torque upgrades from this motor? Or, is there a tuner/software available for it?
I'm toying with the idea of finding one and swapping it inot my FJC sometime this year - the only thing holding me back is the power loss (1kdfte 3.0TD compared to the existing 4.0 gas 1GRFE)
Also, if osmeone could point me in the right direction to finding a engine wiring diagram for the 1kdftv - i will buy you a beer when we come back to oz to visit family later this year!

these engines seem to go quite well
they are a bit slower than the 4l gas engine but they have heaps of torque throughout the rev range
there are electronic "chips" available to give them a bit more grunt
plus if doing a custom install then that is the time to do a nice big exhaust and front mount intercooler all adding to the power
i think your biggest head ache will be the wiring
both the vehicles in question are late model and have many integrated systems with the EFI
if you do get an engine get the diesel trans as well as it works with the engine computer then swap mounts linkages even extension housings etc to fit it but not the core or sensors
you will need diagrams for both trucks
and a really patient electrican with a lateral mind
cheers

There are programable chips available for them from steinbauer or dp chip in aus. I dont no if your going to get much of an advantage by doing this conversion. maybe do some research on fitting a twin turbo V8 from a 200 series that would be good

I dont think 1Vdfte would fit it is a really big engine Physically
they dont fit in a 75 or early 79 series
the fj has an engine bay the same size as a hilux or prado and is a much smaller thing than a 200 series or new 70 series
i am sure it could be done with major chasis mods but not very viable as a converion
the fj cruiser has the same engine as a petrol prado so the diesel of logical choice would be the diesel from a prado
i think the reason for conversion is not for all out power but to have a diesel
as no diesel option is available in the fj cruiser

1kd, were do i start, we replaced 1 10000km old 1kd in a prado under warranty. They seem to have a problem with injectors such as build up of crud that cause a evil diesel knock, outragous build up of carbon after the egr entry to the inlet manifold

here in kiribati we have heaps of hose hi ace vans with the same engine they seem to be suffering the same injector issues
i thought that it was just part and parcel of having modern common rail injection
i will not be surprised if in a year or 2 we see a heap of 1VD powered cruisers suffering the same fate as hey have similar injectors

You hit the nail on the head. the 1VDFTE - too much work to make it fit. The reason i would choose the 1KD is what Jonathon said - the Fj is pretty much the same vehcile as the Prado but with a different body - same frame, trans and overalll weights. The diesel will also give btter MPG and more torque then the 4.0 - and being a diesel mechanic i prefer diesels over gas anyway
Wiring is one of my strong points, so with both diagrams and a few days i should be able to work something out...
Thanks for your replies, now i've got to keep an eye out for a wrecked Prado

Bit of a dig here but the topic seemed appropriate enough to avoid starting a new thread.
I'm looking serously at buying either a KZJ120R or a KDJ120R but red book is throwing out some weird info on the engine in the KDJ120R's. It says its a 1KD-TE (rather than FTV). The engine code in redbook doesnt change to 1KD-FTV until the 150's.
Is this just a redbook mistake or is the 1KD-TE real and different from the FTV.

You can get some awesome power out of the 1KD, I know of a bloke pushing close to 600nM out of his.....
3" exhaust, steinbauer chip and boost controller....this thing flies for a diesel.
Things to look out for are to ensure you use the cleanest diesel fuel you can find as these engines require very clean diesel otherwise the injecotrs can stuff up....at 1,000bux an injector you'll be up for heaps if they stuff up.

Slightly off topic but can you actually convert a car to diesel in California? I thought their crazy smog laws prevented it.

yes you can, we do alot of them here (check out Man-A-Fre on facebook, I have photos up there of projects we've done).
We mainly use 3B, 13BT, and 12HT into 40's and 60's, Currently there is no Smog laws for deisels in CA. Petrol motor smog laws are extremely strictly enforced
