Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hiya, im fairly new to this 4x4 thing but am loving what have so far learnt. However, changing of split rim tyres is givin me lots of grief. does anyone have some detailed info in either diagram or verbal form. nearly lost my head at last attempt so would be grateful for any assistance . thanks, fathead. anthonyclarke9@hotmail.com

I used to work in the industrial/earthmover tyre industry and let me warn you, unless you are experienced at changing split rims, DON'T DO IT YOURSELF!! It's not worth your life. - different story if you know what you are doing, and have the right equipment.

Do yourself a favour, and get an experienced tyre fitter to help/show you have to do it.

Please understand, im not having a go at you, I just know how dangerous these rims are if you are inexperienced. I myself don't know how to change these type of tyre rims, but discussed with our tyre fitters on many occasions their close calls with them (pretty much all industrial and earthmover rims are split).

I agree. The danger lies in reseating the retaining rim. If its not properly in place, it can blow off, taking fingers and heads. Tyre fitters place them in a cage. At a pinch , turn the rim over and stick it under the car when inflating with the ring down. Split rims are great for remote area travel where you tend to have fix more punctures.

Not sure what issue it was, but 4wd monthly had a fairly detailed article on it.

Maybe get a hold of their back issues?

I had a mate of mine at work cut in half ( yes in 2 pieces ) cos he did not use a tyre cage while seating the bead of a split rim.
The rim ended up going through the roof and out onto the road.

Isn't it easier to use normal rims and tyre pliers ???

Easier to use........sure it's hard work.........but that never killed anybody.....especially like a split rim cutting someone in half

A long time friend died about 6 years ago fitting a tyre to a tubeless rim. he was an experianced fitter. the back bead broke and the rim hit him in the head. he was dead before he hit the ground, I have worked in the tyre ndustry for over 23 year, TAKE SOME ADVICE don't touch a tyre unless you know what your doing. 4wd monthly advice or not.
