Newbie Question on Pajero

Hi Guys,
I've scoured the forums looking for at all the info. I've only ever had Nissans and have been out of the 4x4 market since about 04.
I have been looking at two Pajeros,
1. Being a 2005 GLX Auto Pajero. It has about 57053 on the clock and is Petrol. Price $29,900.
or
2. 1998 GLS Auto Pajero. Has about 126158 on it and is also petrol. Price $18,9000

Overall I prefer the 1998 because of price and the old school style. I have never owned a 2000+ 4x4.
Was wondering from those figures what you believe the best deal might be and what i should be looking for and listen for when i get to test drive.
Any problems these models have i should be aware of?
How are the Kms on these for petrol fourbies? is 126,158kms to high for a 98 model. I know diesel has a long life span, how long does petrol usually have?
I know its alot of questions but thank you in advance for all help and advice.

The newer one sounds like an ok deal, if a little pricey. the 98 has LOW kays for that year of 4wd. But $18000 is WAY too much. Look for oil burning on the 98 Model.

mhgill thanks for your reply. Was hoping for a bit more help but......

I am still keen on the 98 Pajero, although you might think it a bit pricey it still leaves me with money to upgrade it and do some building of my own.

Still wondering if anyone can give me their experience with their pajeros from that era. What problems they have found. And how long does the petrol engine usually last?
I intend to get the VIN number and give mitsubishi a call and get a check done on what recalls were required and if this vehicle had them.
I'll post a link to the website of who is selling the vehicle as pictures speak louder than words.

Cheers agian and as I'm a nissan boy and never had a 90s pajero any info would be very helpful to me.
THanks.

Well as you probably know, their off road skills are lacking due to the IFS, This also limits the amount of lift you can fit. Max tyres 33"

Generally the V6's are really good, they mainly just burn oil (valve stem seals or rings)

Anything else you wanna know? you might need to ask more specific questions...

I dont 100% agree with this.

The NL (97-00) pajero can be a very capable offroader. Have factory 30mm body lift over other models and with some very basic mods can be a very good 4b.

I think that 12-14k would be a price range for them in the current market. 18k is pricey.

Spend 5k on mods - front locker (arb), suspension, 33's, and a bullbar, you would be set.

I have owned a modified Swb NL and I assure you they can be very capable.

Hey mate, if your leaning more towards the 98 model you should go with that, but have to agree with the others $18,000 is a bit much for that, have a look at this,
