Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi all,

Still relatively new to this forum, but am finding it increasingly usefull.

So again i am posting a question/problem with the hope that some members will be able to give some usefull advice and perhaps share experiences.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated......

I did a top end rebuild on my 2LT after blowing a head gasket.

While having the head shaved and reco'd i decided to have a good took at the block.

Unfortunately i didnt take any photos before putting everything abck together, but what i found was some significant scouring on the block side of the water pump.

I had never seen anything like this before and it kinda got me worried. Since putting it back together and driving it, the temp didnt pick up unless under heavy loads. I was towing my jet ski down the coast this friday when the temp steadily climbed on every incline on the way. i had to slow to 70 km/h to keep the engine from getting too hot for my liking.

Can anyone tell if they have any experience with something like this and if there is anything i can do?? It hadnt done this until i had noticed the scouring. I could tow my ski fully loaded all day up the beach without a hassle.

I need reliabilty and most definitly dont want to be concerned every time i take the ski on a trip.

In addition to advice on whether this problem is caused my the scouring, could anyone give advice on a motor replacement? I quite like diesel, but is there a tough/powerfull and reliable diesel that will fit into a hilux??

Any help would be very appreciated and i know there is a wealth of knowledge between the members of this forum.

the scouring behind the pump is often a sign of the coolant never being changed or lack of proper coolant being used.

i would go through the usuall 2lt overheating check list first (cheeck out surf forum). otherwise there is a chance that it has pinholed the block and is leaking into the water jacket behind.

i understand later 2.8 pumps are a direct swap and have a different impeller which helps with cavation casued by excess rpm's.

if it has holed the block i would fit a 2.8 block (i don't know if you have a 2lt(1) or 2lt(2), not sure if you can swap the 2.8 with 2lt(1)'s. 2lt(2) is fine)

Thank you for the input mate. Didnt know that lack of/incorrect coolant could have any effect on the block.

Either way this does sound a little more serious than i had first expoected.

How would i go about checking if the block has been pinholed? would it be obvious if were looking for a hole in the block (and not just assesing the scour as i was when last i was in there)? and would water leaking through to the jacket also indicate a loss of water/coolant? my water levels are constant and i dont seem to be looking any water at all.

Thank you for the info in the 2.8 water pump, if the block is fine, then a 2.8 water pump might be a good idea

I do believe it is a 1st gen 2.4LTe, does that imply that it is a 2LT(1)?
Also, by fitting a 2.8 block, do you mean swapping motors for a 2.8 and getting rid of the 2LT?

sorry i don't know you can test for it except pull the pump out and look.

2lte is diffeent again.
2lt(1) has roller rockers (i can't remember what color rocker it is)
2lt(2) isn't.
2lte is fly by wire ECU controlled with electronic injection pump. not easy to do a 3L (2.8) conversion due to having to mod it fit the crank sensor.
when i mean conversion i mean just swapping the 2.4 block with the 2.8 block and keeping all the turbo gear.

All good, i didnt think there would be an easy way to do it.

I didnt realise there were so many variations. Dont quote because i might have it wrong. Its 1988 model engine and doestnt have roller rockers and uses a metal on metal cam assembly.

This may sounds like a sill question, but my experience with ECU controlled motors has been minimum, how do i tell which 2LT i have?
its an import so the VIN isnt much use in aust as it just states IMPORT.

Thanks for clearing that up, does a 2.8 bolt straight up to a 2LT(2)? or do i need to modify anything?

an '88 will be 2lt(2). straight swap with 2.8. use 2lt turbo, injection etc. just wind the fuel up a bit due to the increase in capacity. make sure 2.8 has oil cooler and piston oil squirters. if not sap them over from 2lt.

Correct me if i am wrong but im pretty sure there is ment to be a machined mark in the divet in the block where the pumps impeller sits , im pretty sure its just to clean up the block casting to allow the pump not to fowl? , to a newcomer to diving inside an engine on any level that may look at out place as the casting is rough and the "scoring" part is all smooth ( i always looked at this every time i had a waterpump off a hilux diesel) just my 2cents

To further that , if i had a block laying round here anymore id take a photo to confirm it however i threw about 3 2Ls and 1 3L out the other week as they were just gathering dust
