2LT Water Pump - SCOUR ON BLOCK

Hi all,
Still relatively new to this forum, but am finding it increasingly usefull.
So again i am posting a question/problem with the hope that some members will be able to give some usefull advice and perhaps share experiences.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated......
I did a top end rebuild on my 2LT after blowing a head gasket.
While having the head shaved and reco'd i decided to have a good took at the block.
Unfortunately i didnt take any photos before putting everything abck together, but what i found was some significant scouring on the block side of the water pump.
I had never seen anything like this before and it kinda got me worried. Since putting it back together and driving it, the temp didnt pick up unless under heavy loads. I was towing my jet ski down the coast this friday when the temp steadily climbed on every incline on the way. i had to slow to 70 km/h to keep the engine from getting too hot for my liking.
Can anyone tell if they have any experience with something like this and if there is anything i can do?? It hadnt done this until i had noticed the scouring. I could tow my ski fully loaded all day up the beach without a hassle.
I need reliabilty and most definitly dont want to be concerned every time i take the ski on a trip.
In addition to advice on whether this problem is caused my the scouring, could anyone give advice on a motor replacement? I quite like diesel, but is there a tough/powerfull and reliable diesel that will fit into a hilux??
Any help would be very appreciated and i know there is a wealth of knowledge between the members of this forum.
