ive just put a standard petrol in my patrol and done a full rewire.

ive got power to coil, power at the dizzy lead on the dizzy but it still wont fire. the ground is grounding the wires are all hooked up how they should be according to the manual and to my knowledge.

how touchy are the points and timing on an old carby patrol? the rotor button and cap are near new by the look of them.

any help appreciated

are you saying that you have spark but it wont fire up???

the dizzy is getting spark from the coil but the sparkplugs arent getting that spark. have 11.8V at the end of the lead from the coil while turning over.

hmmm...how did you check to see if the sparkplugs artant sparking??

did you pull number 1 lead off and put a plug in it and rest it on abit of metal and crank to see if there is spark

to do a quick check of the points pull the dizzy cap and turn the motor untill the points are sitting on the highest point on the cam and see if you can see a gap if no gap i would say that. that would be you prob

hey there. if your coil is getting power and is sparking at the "coil lead" to the dizzy, your problem is inside the dizzy u can rule out points because if u are getting a spark on the coil lead then obviously the points are working. the next step is to see if the rotor button is earthing out sometimes when they crack they earth through to the dizzy shaft. to test this simply take the dizzy cap off and get someone to crank the motor while u hold the coil lead a flea shit off the rotor button. if u see a spark it means your rotor is earthing the idea here is to see no spark. if u see no spark then move to the next part is the dizzy cap good i.e no cracks if so are the leads ok adn then the plugs if u still do not get any spark at the plugs and everything is fine and dandy check your timing i hope this helps u mate

thanx, yes i was earthing the plug to the chassis. ill check the rotor earth tomorrow.

new problem though. the coil is getting VERY hot. i know they get quite warm but its almost untouchable and i have asbestos hands. has a good earth and the power wire isnt getting warm either. still only had 12V going into it so it isnt getting too many Volts.

BUT, im having a few wiring gremlins (intermittent) so i think ill have to take it to a sparky to look at for me :bad-words: there goes buying a house in the next decade.

There are coils around that run on abt 9/9.5 volts in 12v cars. The wrong voltage coil would get very hot quickly but I believe they should still start the vehicle..
