Ls series rear drop sump

Post by bru21 »

I'm chasing a rear drop sump for my buggy.

Is the VE sump shallow, I have never seen one?

I used a camaro sump last time but am having trouble sourcing one.

Eagle has one for $685 but I have seen them going for $2-300.

Any ideas where to get one?

let me know if you have one please

this what you are looking for ?
Thanks, but I saw those this morning.

They are too deep for my application, but if I get desperate I can raise the motor and use one. My sump is 170mm high and they are 202mm. Ideally I get a 170mm rear drop.

I rang around today

suburban has deep ones $385 inc pickup used
holmart new only $700 odd would not quote
eagle $685 dip, pickup, pan no wind. New
usaspecial as above $425 new/ fitted
Holden $920 sump bare
Jegs $250 + $90 pickup + 75 dip US +del moroso

still no shallow ones - Forgot to ask if eagle were shallow - was first place i called, - I thought too dear but will call in tomorrow if I go to Bris

Its annoying paying more than $200 as they are almost rubbish in the USA and get given away (as the commodore ones are here)

cheers bru

Dropped into Eagle today bought the camaro one for $685.60, inc pickup, dipstick, pan. The pick up is on back order, but i'm sure that won't be holding me up any time soon.

They hade deep pans for the same price too.

What was frustrating is my motor is an ls2 which according to them - should all have rear camaro sumps already - apart from the VZ HSV ones which mine is. They had one there for $5500 which is still more then I paid so I am sweet.

Mine is still in its cardboard box, I will have to have a look as I thought mine was front sump.
Awesome if it is a rear!

Also just picked up this book today http://www.pitstop.net.au/view/products ... plu/21251/
seems like a good read with lots of LS tech

It appears the motors are filled with oil. I undid the sump plug a few turns and oil started coming out, I didn't have a container to put it in so I left it. Might drop it into the new sump - not sure if its a break in oil or not, so I don't want to dump it.

I have a little more to do on my chassis before I need the sump fitted for engine mounting anyway.

I swapped it over today. The windage tray needs cutting down to 180mm from the front of the sump edge. Its in line with the second line of bolts that hold it on.

can anyone tell me if u need a different oil pickup for a rear sump on a LS1??

ive never had one apart, so i can only assume theres a pick up off the bottom of the motor, or is it built into the sump?

yes every pickup is different.

the front sump has a remote oil filter with lines hidden inside the sump, the oil pickup is short and straight into the pan.

There are a few different rear ones ie: deep truck, shallow camaro, shallow VE commo, as well as strandard dry sump on ls7

so does that mean i need to buy other parts other than the sump??

The front sump dipstick goes into the sump the rear drop goes into the block - you will need to knock out a dowel plug.

to sum it up you need: dipstick and tube, sump, windage tray, and pickup to suit the application. As far as I can tell the oil filters have a different part number too (both the ones I have are ac delco and have different numbers)
