Outer Limits 4x4 Board

so i took the vitara ('96 LWB) through some mud holes (no snorkel or anything) worst was over the bonnet for around 2 seconds anyway most were around 15-20" deep.

basically the engine is shaking alot now at low rpm (500-1500) but dissappears suddenly once a bit higher. while idling it seems to lose speed down to 500rpm or so then come back up to the usual 800 and shakes alot when accelerating up to 1500rpm n above.

basically any ideas as to what would be causing this would be good

secondly when adding a snorkel what else should be waterproofed?

Take the air filter cover off will more then likely be filled with water just dry it out you may need to change the filter to if its realy soaked.

my vitara does the same :(
were it sucks the air in is in a bad spot and sucks up tonns of water.

yeah i did it before i posted here, was dry but obviously had got a little bit fo water in didnt look like much had though, where exactly does it suck air in from anyway, i had a quick look and looks like it goes behind the FL tyre

Just sounds like the ignition is wet to me.

Make sure the distributor and leads are dry

Yeah the air intake is right behind the FL tyre.

yeah prob distributor then.

so when putting a snorkel on what else needs to be waterproofed apart from the now obvious distributor

Although it looks bodgey, an old Morris Mini trick was to put a rubber glove over the distributor and have the leads coming out of the fingers. Just make sure you seal all the holes in the glove up properly and hey presto, a water resistant dizzy

I was thinking about sealing everything with silastic (diz cap on, and all leads on) it would be a prik to take off, but it shouldn't have to come off very often.

If i do deep enough crossings, at speed, once i exit the water the car mis-fires for about 10-15 seconds. I actually killed a distributor in the bush about 4-5km from road. (Sierra)

Proof right there why you should never buy a 4wd with more than 4 cylinders

here is one i did a while ago, bit perished but you get the
idea.

well i fixed the problem, think the problem was dodgy spark plugs and there was water in one of the places the spark plugs go so i reckon it was shorting out before it could fire.

ive had a similar problem with a '96 LWB. changed the plugs once and the problem came up again. i figured the coil needs replacing.

by the way. the water crossing wasnt even deep but i dove in fast enough to get muddy water splashed all over the valve cover and the firewall where the dizzy and coils sit.

well i did do some slow catious ones and then some quite fast ones as well haha.......the whole engine bay was basically covered in mud....in fact the whole car
