i have been looking 4 some mud tyres and got a qoute of $275 per tyres for a set of mudzillas but was informed that they are illegal on the road can anyone verify this for me

I Have them and the cops have never said anything to me and their 35x13.5x15 a good tyre all round hope it helps cheers Ev

what are they like on the road

Good had no dramas in the rain with stopping but as times are getting tuff they are coming off and road tyres on as don't wont to kill them with just hwy k's cheers Ev

the legal problem will be that they are bias ply not radial. Since if your 4wd originally came with radials is must keep radials.

Don'T know you lost me i brought it with 35x12.5x15 super swampers and the guy i went to to get the maxxis said they would be legal in Vic and if anything the cops in my area wont them for their GU paddy waggon cheers Ev

illegal in what way? Are they bigger than the stock tyres on your vehicle as you can't go bigger than about 25mm in QLD. Or are they a different speed rating to what is allowed on your vehicle.

What vehicle do you have and what size tyres are you buying?

Of course you could always just ring the QLD DOT and find out from the right people

just because the local coppers dont do you for it doesnt mean they not illegal.

mine are fairly worn, in the wet they handle well for the type of tyre they are, they get some fair slippage if the road is greasy though, and mine atm are fair noisy, but i like that road noise they tend to howl a little when they get low. i would buy them again definatly that is after i get me a set of trepadors

I came across the "they are illegal for highway use" when I started looking for mud tires. Upon checking it is that they are not speed rated for a lot of 4x4s. Meaning that do not meet minimum vehicle standards and can void insurance.

id like to see someone doin 100 kays with them on very hard to balance

I have a couple of mates with these tyres & I have never found them to be that hard to balance.

mine were balanced quite awhile ago and are still in balance .no problem at 100 or 110 cant see how they go at a faster speed as thats as fast it the old girl goes down hill with a tail wind.
pity their stopping them mickey thompson just jellous that maxxis did it better

think i payed $280 about 2 1/2 yrs ago

i do 100 on them easy...slight vibration at 50k's. paid 320 each for 35x13.5 16 6months ago. I wouldnt use them as dailys tho, wear too quick

so I'm guessing you didn't actually question them about what was actually illegal about them, just took it at face value. Did he by chance try and sell you a different brand of tyre that was "legal"?

he said they were illegal because they aren't radial tyres but no i didn't buy another set that is why i did this post to see how many other people ran them and what their thoughts on them was before i purchase a set

They are not ADR compliant for most post 86 vehicles as they are not highway speed rated or meet the tyre placard specifications. The fitter could be held liable for any damage or accident even if not caused by the tyres. This why many retailers are hesitant to fit to a vehicle, will mount to rims but not fit to vehicle.

Interesting you say that.

Have a close look at most Police/D Cars (QLD) and see exactly how "legal" they are (hint: check exhaust system and "missing" component").

I got pulled up a little while ago in my daily by a Police officer who had one headlight, one rear night light out and tyres on the indicators.

Needless to say I was given a warning only

As for the Mudzillas, I have them in a 33/12.5 on my truck and I seriously cannot fault them at all. Little noisy on road, and have a nasty habit of picking damn tek screws in the same bloody tyre about once a month, but wonderful off road, the only issue they seem to have is with real slippery clay and thats about it. Wven rock driving they dont get shredded as much as I thought they would.

it would seem to me that legality is a mood point in this thread as most good/decent offroad rubber is bais ply anway.
ie swampers virtually every model, simex , silversone extreame,any of the larger baja claws and im sure a shitload of others so it would seem the vast majority of people in this forum are proably not legal either for oversize (who's not over 50 mm dia bigger?) or for bias ply and wanting some decent traction.

bias ply can be legal, it all depends on the vehicle and what requirements that vehicle has for legality in regards to tyres and what the actual tyre relates to legality,

As always it is up to each individual to find out for themselves if their own vehicle is legal or not. Don't base it on what someone else has or does. There are so many variants from state tot state, vehicle to vehicle, tyre to tyre etc etc to rely on a faceless person on the internet telling you their mates, next door neighbours, girlfriends, cousins dog walker did the exact same thing albeit with bigger tyres on a different car in a different state and hs never been picked up by the cops for it so just go for it.

I thought I answered your question on retailer notifying you of the potential that the tyre maybe "illegal". I was told and subsequently checked that they are not highway speed rated, therefore was not an issue when in the bush wheeling, just hope that nothing happens at speed, I had to fit them myself to the car as they didn't want the liability. Your call if want to fit them, but then there is no comeback on anyone but you.
