95 Hilux Surf 4x4 not engaging -electric or mechanical prob?

Post by WTF »

hello all,

had a look through several pages to see if this has been asked before but didnt have much luck.

I just bought a 1995 Hilux surf 3.0 T-D last night with a known issue.

the previous owner claims that a computer control box which is now missing from the vehicle died which engages the front wheels.

I looked under the car when the transfer case lever is engaged to 4x4 moded and it does not spin at all.

from my understanding the front driveshaft should spin when in 4x4 mode regardless of any electronics being faulty at all? doesnt the switch just lock the front hubs in?

we spoke to the previous owner stating that we think the issue is related to the transfer case itself, not electrical, but he swore that his mechanic says its a simple electrical prob.

Does anyone have any input on this?

in general, cars ok to look at, but seems to have some quirks with it, def needs new suspension (would love some aftermarket lifted stuff), either the mystery "electrical" box, or transfer case, needs replacement alternator and some other bits - anyone got any recommendations for a place in brisbane with this stuff?

thankyou kindly for your help :)

Mate they have an electrical motor on the transfer case for the "Push Button 4wd", they sometimes stick & don't engage the transfer case.

But if it is missing the controller then it won't engage the front diff nor the transfer case!

Mate do a search on here and you will find answers to every question you have about the surf http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/inde ... 14c6ff5145

it could be the electric motor or it could be vacum problem with the front diff check all vacum lines under the bonnet are connected the vsv that operate the front diff are on the drivers side inner gaurd with a vacume tank under the wheel arch

Electric motor to engage transfer gears.
Electric over vacuum to engage the ADD system.

Surfs have fixed front hubs not FWH or Auto hubs.

If the electric 4wd control box is missing your not gunna get 4wd.
