Programmable tuning box.

So I have a non-turbo diesel which I intend to turbo.
The turbo and associated hardware are no problem. However the fuel management is.

This is an EFI diesel with a VP44 electronic rotary injection pump. I need to buy a tuning box which is:
1. Plug in (I'm not cutting and soldering fuel pump wires)
2. Reprogrammable by me for injection timing and fuel delivery through the rev range.
3. Doesn't mess with idle speed (there are some hack boxes out there).

Does anybody have a suggestion? I've talked to one dealer on the phone today and he said many of the "adjustable" systems only give you a small window for fine tuning, which isn't suitable for my application.

The engine is a YD22, I have not found a tuning box for this engine. There are tuning boxes for the YD22DDT used in the european Almera, but these are to uprate an already turbocharged engine.

Come on KB - you know you want to build your own... ;)

MATLAB Simulink is the way to go... It works for the Prius, and a bunch of other toyota models...

It's for my work car, that means the car that gets me to work. Not the car that gets all my work. ;)

If you are buying the turbo in kit form, does the supplier supply on with it?
What you really are asking for is the equivelant to motec for petrol engines. However I know of nothing for diesels like that avaialble yet.

I'll be piecing the turbo kit together myself. A mix of parts from other nissans (ports on a SR20 turbo manifold seem to match up) and I have a garage overflowing with turbos. Stilll looking for a suitable size variable vane, if not the T25 from my rangie will suffice.

I know what you mean by the motec, but I probably exaggerated my requirements a little. Basically I need a tuning box which I can tune down to zero extra fuel.

Dunno, do they make anything like this? I couldn't find anything relevant on this website.

i've been looking at a company in teh states with a very unfortunate name.

MEGASQUIRT.

its a stand along efi and engine management system that you can build yourself and that has a completely open architecture. Meaning you can adjust the fuel level to what ever you like to tune your engine.
or you can just download the basic package and use that.

It can also have two MAPS, meaning that if you are running deisel and gas, you can do everything at the push of a button like switch fuels, advance timing, change boost.

Its worth looking at.
the prices on ebay are about the same as from the supplier too.

Its petrol based. I don't know how you will operate a CAN electronic system inside the pump as well as the extras.

Plan B is turning into a winner.

On the weekend I stumbled across a nissan people mover which has the YD25DDTi mounted sideways in the front, all the accessories and mounts looked to be in the same position as in my YD22.

So I started calling wreckers, who put me onto other interesting people. One hour later and I think I've bought a complete van with some injection issues. :D

If this works (it'll be going into storage for at least six months) I'll be going straight from 55kw to 110kw.

Just got an interesting reply that fits with both Plan A and Plan B.

http://www.dieseltuning.nl/Extra-Vermogen/ have a VP44 hyperterminal kit which does exactly what I want. It allows modification of every individual part of the power curve apparently.

Cost is 449 euros for the tuning kit and wiring loom, 170 euros for the software and 25 euros postage.

I think it's the reprgrammable version of this:

Here is a box that will plug into the ECU.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CHIP-TUNING-CHIP- ... 6002r30438

another box might be programmable you'd have to ask them I guess

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Diesel-Tuning-Per ... 2003r36379

Models of car with a YD22 motor.
Almera Tino
X-TRAIL
X-TRAIL 2,2 dCi

2.2 ltr motor.

Your better to look for model of car rather than motor.

This USA company does boxes for all the models above, not sure if they are programable
http://www.tuningbox.com/index.php

I take your after one of the box like the US diesels have where you select a tune on the fly it changes everything around, I don't know if the euros or Jap diesels have that sort of support.

I did find a box that does 30% increase in power on the motor your using though most boxes are 20 to 25% increase.

no idea if that megasquirt would do it as all the DIY kits are for petrol motors.

Those ebay tuning boxes you've linked to are for dCi engines which are common rail. The same YD22 block is used with several different injection systems and mine isn't common rail.
There was a nissan almera with the same injection system, but the off-the-shelf tuning boxes for those will not provide good results with an ECU which wasn't programmed for a factory turbo.

I'm not after "shift on the fly maps", I'm after a box which is completely reprogrammable to work with the hardware I bolt to it. The www.dieseltuning.nl guys are the only ones I've found with that option and I'll likely buy one when the time comes.
