There's really three answers to this question.

Can a chip improve the performance of a GTI motor?

Maybe, a bit, but on a motor with a stock head, stock cams etc, I'd be surprised if there's more than maybe 10% in the motor. There's also the possibility that a chip burnt specifically for 98 octane might release some extra power.

Bear in mind a swift motor is already at 77hp/litre. That's quite good. That's equivalent to a 462HP aspirated Gen 4 V8 - so that's a pretty hot tune.

At the bottom end of the claim for that chip, you're at 100hp/litre. That's a very very high number indeed, generally only achieved with very sophisticated motors with forged internals, variable valve timing etc. (BMW M3, Honda S2000... Porsche GT3 etc) getting a Swift GTi to this level of atmo tune is going to be a huge task.

The second part of this answer is could this chip release 35 to 45 HP (so that's a 35-45% power increase) I'm going to say no, that's not feasible. At all, without big changes in the engines ability to breathe.

I've driven a GTi motor (in a GTi) and thought it was a ripper. I Reckon I'd be happy with what I was getting out of it myself.

Steve.

i went the gti motor as the mods have been proven to work as just a bolt on option.
sr20 throttle body, bored out AFM, chipped ecu and nice exhaust will see you with quite a bit more power than stock.
then you have turbo chippes and can run ca18 turbo injecters slip straight in and you have more power.

You really don't want to be buying chips off ebay, the sellers on there can be very dodgey. You want to speak to Garndi (sp) off www.redlinegti.com he sells chips to suit all kinds of custom setups from turbos, to blower, to stock motors. Yes there are gains to be had with a chip on a stock motor, mostly the rev limit increase as these motors will pull past 8000rpm unlike alot of engines that drop off before the rev limit. IMO you'd be better off researching on redlinegti and possibly doing an SR20 throttle body mod and a decent set of extractors and exhaust, run 98 octane and get a chip to suit that plus maybe a little more compression from a slight head shave if you're keen. Nearly all the cams available and chips to suit them will raise your tourque band which you don't want so be wary of them.

All that said and done, 35-45hp from a chip in a 100hp motor is a joke, not possible I'm afraid, you will however notice small gains more when dealing with such low power to begin with.

And all these points are moot if you have a MK1 motor like myself as they cannot be chipped, to modify they require a full aftermarket ecu.

the other thing about the power to be had with the n/a chips

its mostly above 6000rpm, so from day to day it may not help you at all

Setting it up for a sierra may very well just be a case of adjustable cam gears to pull the power band down lower. (widen the lobe seperation?) Sure the `Peak` HP may not be as impressive on a dynograph but it would be much better pushing the weight around at urban speeds.

Look at the jimny sohc g13bb for example its peak torque is on par with the dohc and has the advantages of a lighter cast crank (from memory a g13a crank is 7kgs and a gti 10kgs)

thanks guys I wont bother with it then I'll just run the gti motor as std
