I'm just looking at the specs of the J20A engine and wonder what they've changed over the years to increase the power/torque.

Grand Vitara - 94KW/5900RPM, 174Nm/4300RPM. Compression ratio - 9.3
SX4 - 107kW/5800RPM, 184Nm/3500RPM. Compression ratio - 9.5

Same displacement and bore size for both.

It can't be as simple as increasing the compression ratio a small amount is it?

Changed the cam profile?

In some markets you'll find the comp listed quite a bit higher although the power and torque figures remain the same. I have the piston part numbers somewhere but you need to import them. They also added a variable intake system.

kinda in topic...... i saw some specs for the 06 and later gv the other day, with the j20a engine, the 5 speed version has 4.1 diff ratios and a 1:1 5th gear and 4.55???:1 fist gear. that would make a killer box for crawling and with the right transfer/diff ratios would be good for highway. question is, is that gearbox interchangeable with the box from the earlier j20a that was in the 98 on vitara
