G'day im chasing some info on the 79 hilux, as im looking to buy one in the near future but don't want to be limited by a lack of aftermarket parts/upgrades.And is the model number for this year the RN36?
One particular model im hoping to have a look at has an 18R with a 4sp and seeing as a fair bit of my 4wding is up at rainbow beach or beerwah i dont really want to be revving the crap out of the 18r in 4th. I know there are 5sp models in years close to this but are the gearboxes a direct changeover or do new mounts etc have to be made up and what are the availability/cost of these gearboxes?
The next thing on the list to look at would be the 18r and its lack of power, it would make a nice putt along but more power is better right?! what are the most straight forward and cost effective engine swaps(with trying to avoid diesel as im not very familar with them) would a 3rz be to new/difficult and expensive to do a swap?
And finally how many of these are running around today?, mainly for spares as previous experience has shown me that blowing diff's in a disco in rainbow beach can be a costly and painful experience.

The 79 thru 83 model Hilux came out in a couple of models.
The RN 36 was the Short wheel base model which only came out with a single cab 18r and 4 speed and the 100 inch wheel base.
The RN 46 came in 18r 4 speed and 2.2 diesel 4 speed and a 109 inch wheel base in single cab and dual cab.
The easiest engine mod is a 22r which should drop in but the 5 speed is longer and needs a mod to the transfer case cross member.
The 84 model had the bigger moter and 5 speed standard stronger chasiss and more parts will just bolt in. I wolud start there unless you really want the rn 36. Are there many around, when they only sold 400 i would say not.
Regards RN 36 a proud SWB hilux owner

Have a 83 dual cab which was a diesel, all the early hiluxs engines are slow.
3RZ seems to be a good swap.
I put a v6 auto in mine and was very happy with power, great for soft sand with the big tyres.
Unless you really want a gen 1 hilux look for a 84 on as the 5 speed is standard as RN36 said.
Trying to get one with no rust could be hard, thats why l bought mine as it had stuff all rust.
Cheers
Matt

I have an RN46, and it goes fine for an 18r 4spd with 31" tyres. I have read about the 18R EFI out of celicas to be dropped in.
If your looking for a Rn46 pm me as I may look to sell it as I never ever drive it since I have a work vehicle now.
But yeah I am a fan of these models and dont mind keeping it, its just that I have to many cars sitting out front and the neighbours are getting pissed off.

hay mate i got a rn46 1983 model and mine had the 18r and 4spd.ive now got a 4y with 5spd out of a 88 model
wat i done was move the engine mounts forward about 20mm and got professionally welded back on ino that illegal but u cant tell the difference when its all painted black.
and because 2y,3y,4y are all the same engines if 1 ever blows up all u hav 2 do is buy a 2y,3y,4y and dont hav 2 change anything.its the simplest conversion. the power in my 4y is awesome compared 2 the 18r plenty more power (as much power as a 4 cylinder does) the 5 speed i got is great aswell helps out from the underpowered 4y. 1 problem i had from the 5 speed is i also had to move the crossmember back about 30-35mm cus the 5spd is longer. i just got 10mm plate and welded it on the original crossmember n once again when painted black u dont notice it. the 4y is the way to go out of the 3 other engines its the biggest and most powerful unless u go 3rz which i plan to do on mine in the near future
there is a hilux wrecker in caboolture on the way to bribie island and he has everything u will need if u live in the area thats where i get all my parts from.hope i helpe ya out

hey thanks for the info guys! so a good starting point would be a 84 model onwards with a petrol 5sp making it easier to do a 3rz conversion later. so that'd be a Y motor but what box would it have and what mods are needed to replace the Y with the 3rz? another thought was to use the A/C from the 3rz, what models(if any) had A/C in them ?

if you wanted to put a commodore v6 and auto into a hilux here is a nice bit of information.........
this also works with any vehicle with an asian warner auto g/box as the 94 jackeroo/rodeo auto bellhousing will bolt to this g/box and these g/boxes are found in a variety of cars including toyota's so if you have a car with an asian warner auto then all you need is a bellhousing from a 94 jackaroo/rodeo and a slightly modified converter and your in buisiness without having to spend $$$$$$ for a marks addaptor

Very interesting
Found this on the net---
Asian-Warner AW-4 tranny's are running around in hundreds of thousands 4.0 Wranglers and Cherokees. When I was a tech at the local Jeep dealer we had no problems whatsoever out of this tranny. If the new 6-spd. auto in the '07 trucks is half as good as the AW-4, it will be a great tranny. Just my $.02

It would be easier to do a 3rz conversion into a 84 on truck due to it being fitted witha 5 speed std that way u can bolt on a 2wd 3rz belhousing and be on your way
the rn 46/36 has the gear box cross member located further forward due to the shorter box so the drive shafts are differnt lengths shorter front longer back
i fitted a 3sge into a rn 46 using a 5 speed bolted to the original cross member in original position and it all fitted due to the 3sge being shorter it also helped with fire wall clearance more power than a 3rz you just have to be prepared to rev it
IMHO the rn 46 looks heaps better than the 84 and is lighter i luv how it is a no bull truck with metal dash and the old round lights
hence my latest one it runs an 80 series chassis and a twin turbo 3ltr supra engine:twisted:
here is a pick of the 3sge in the rn 46 ignore the coils it is an rn 46 thats another story

The RN 36 was the Short wheel base model which only came out with a single cab 18r and 4 speed and the 100 inch wheel base.
I think you will find there were 5 speeds in the shorties as well.

I have a 1981 RN46 with a 4 speed 18r, only 80k on the clock... emaculate condition..
i love it, sat in my old bois shed for 25 years LOL
But same as every one else i wanna do something about the lack of top end speed... first thing that comes to mind is 5speed... easyer said then done. without creating mounts n shit the only option i see is to find a rn36-46 5speed that has been rolled or w/e... So im after a little infomation is there a engine + gear box that will go in her without to much mounting customization?? and if so will i have to get the tail shafts etc??? also i hurd from a few ppl that the original diffs from the rn46 wont bolt onto the 1984+ 5speed box :|
Im a diesel fitter by trade... making mounts n shit isnt a big porblem for me but i would like to make it as easy as possialbe..
any infomation would be great, thanks....
(would it just be easier to sell her for some good $$ and get a newer efi one? i hurd there not as tuff as the old girls??)
