There is a guy steve or killalux on outers that does harness etc for gen1 engine swaps, maybe have a talk to him?

He is on the sunshine coast.

I am the auto elec that has been working on it. I have it all connected up, TPS, Speed sensors etc. However the toyota PCM no longer receives engine speed signals, and therfore goes into limp mode all the time. Some times it changes gears correctly, sometimes it don't. I see no way to convert LS1 cam and crank signals to match the toyota PCM, without complicated prcessor based circuits (out of my league). If anyone has any suggestions i am happy to listen.

Marks adapter have been contacted and spoken to in depth, and they have no soloution to the prob, they are working on an interface module but have no expected completion date as they can't get it to work.
I do not know how they can sell an engine/transmission conversion kit and not have something to make it work electronically.

Andrew i disagree with the strength issue in a way. I spoke to the guys at wholesale automatics when i was researching the engine swap for my 80, and they advised me that to suit the different torque curve of the LS1, i would need to upgrade the torque converter and valve body, about $2000 worth, plus labour. Now put thatr $2000 into a 4L60E and its a pretty good box.

Also with the toyota box you are stuck with it changing gears at around 5000RPM (if you could get it to stay out of limp mode), now my LS1 hits peak HP at 5900RPM, so to me the shows that the toyota box is useless for this application.
The toyota gearbox also seems to suck lots of HP, as dyno figures show between mine and dans truck, Both with MAFless tunes, Mine running 35" mud tyres, dans on 33" all terains, Mine still had around 40 - 50 HP more at the wheels with the 4L60E.
Other advantage of the 4L60 or 4L80 is they are fully tuneable throung LS1 edit software, can change shift times, line pressures etc.

looks like the LS1 auto would be a better choice.

The toyota auto is a good thing, and with some minor tweaks is pretty bullet proof, and certainly a better option than the 60 or 65E the 80 might be getting closer.

The auto will not shift properly without the engine input, as they remove timing on the shift, and monitor speed, throttle position and all that stuff, and if you cant piggy back the signals to the toyoa ecu to make it think its running the engine, then it wont work, will rev high to change and stick in 4th gear.

I am using a microtech in mine for spark and fuel on the 1fz-fe, and we have piggy backed that from the toyota sensors so the auto still works like it should.

You can buy aftermarket boxes that need to be programmed to run them, but you need a week off to get the programming done.

The 80 series auto will always be far stonger than a 4l60E look at both of them a part planet sizes clutches etc there is no comparison seen cruiser autos do 500000 k's every day of the week, why dident they remove the 80 box and fit a 60 box same transmission but hydralic version?you can then play with tv and governor to get good shift timing, what advantages did the wholesale valvebody have? There are a few easy mods to make it drive better...

I while back my ears pricked up when i heard you were chasing the speed signal in the back of the box you said at that point you could reprogram the delco pcm

as far as i can see you have a few options
1 can you enter a program into the chev pcm to trigger a placebo output for the toyota ecu on one of the disused output chanels or use some thing that is not essential ie egr or some thing.

2 use a hydraulic valve body from a early 80 series diesel cruiser or 3f powered rig get it tweaked to do what you want

3 get a conversion box made to adapt the tacho signal (pm me) i have done this before to run an electronic auto behined a 1hdfte from a 79 series

4 reprogram the delco pcm to trigger the solinioids in the toyota box at the desired times (as assasin said you will need a week to fully get it right though

5 get a chev gearbox

cheers

Gday Steve. Im not clued up on the latest boxes behind the v8's, the cruiser box is truck like but with that comes dependability...you dont need to spend anything on them...std they shift fairly slow...the 100 series 4.5 auto was tricked up to shift better... a work mate has an ex police car (5.7 auto) about 4 years old now and did his first set of clutches at 70,000kms, under warrenty not long after buying it...second set at 120,000k (the ones they didnt replace under warrenty) is that an L60e or the L80 box??

the 4l60e is marginal in stock form for a 4x4. The 4l80e is electronic version of the old T400, but with overdrive. They will take 600HP in stock form.

I guess it could be said that the toyota is a great box, For the application it was designed for.
However when put in front of a higher reving V8, And not being able to have all the signals to make it shift properly, Its rubbish.

My opinion when it comes to electronic auto boxes is they are matched to a particular engine, so don't go mixing and matching (to some degree)

So why is the ls 1 higher revving ?

Its only some time, and some smarts to solve the issue you have, with the best auto you could use.
