Winch question, water in motor.

Hi there, have a 10,000lb low mount warne winch, just turned it over and heap of rusty and black water came out of the moter side. Truck has been kept out side past 2 weeks and had plenty rain. I noticed there are a couple 5mm slots where motor meets backing plate, these are at the top, am assuming water getting in there, are these slots supposed to be drainage slots and there for at the bottom or are they breathing slots and need to be at the top. The motor is new and came from Hobzeys 4X4, it came fitted with a breather which is also at the top with the slots. Am thinking of trying to remove the motor while still on bar and turning so slots at bottom???
Or do i drill a little drainage hole?? Or maybe just silicone the whole thing, but then nothing can get out if it does find its way in??
Any feedback be much appreciated.
