Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking at gettin a new phone before we drive down to cliffhanger, I have got a nokia CDMA in car kit with a high gain external antenna.

Im wanting to do the same thing agian but with a Next G setup, trying to avoid bluetooth, would prefer the old mic, speaker and charging cradle setup. Also would like so stay with a nokia phone if possable.

Could anyone shead some light on this stuff for me please, as we will be traveling with young kids now, and have other big trips in the near future.

Not many phones have external aerial connections anymore.

I just got he new tradies phone from telstra ie. dust / water / shock resistant which would also make it a good 4wd phone. Its a brick of a thing buts its basic which suits me. also i have data alowance as well so i can connect to the net. its hopeless on the phone screen but it can sycronise with my laptop and i can use normal internet through the phone and its not too slow. not something you would use every day but handy for travel.

I dont know about full car kits but i have a bluetooh headunit so as soon as i start the car it automatically connects so i dont even need to take it out of my pocket. and if i want extra range i plug it into the big airal.

just one option. its a ZTE - E159 (TELSTRA) phone.

The plug for the antenna is part of the cradle it sits in.

I have the telstra T165.

I have heard bad bad stories about the newer model of this phone (T165i), there is no problems with the phone itself but problems in the way it acts when plugged into the hands free kit - ZTE who make these phones and all the "Telstra" branded ones are in the process of updating the phones again to prevent these issues.

ZTE - 159 is a telstra branded phone. Ie telstra phones are made by zte and the first ones were rubbish.

ZTE-159 is a new one and I have only had it a week so I cant say if it will keep working or not.

My ZTE started off ok, then after the second recall on them, work gave me a new nokia. But I tend to be hard on phones dropping them regularly. thus why I got the F158 originally :(

Think you will struggle with the external aeriel thing with the newest nokia's. I have had a few weeks the n95... certainly not a tradey phone but rep family work they seem good. Good cover the key eg from wow get the silicon type similar to that on your ipod...

Reception is great... i have given up on car kits as such and just run ciggy charger and blue ant hands free kit which i must say is excelent if you do give in and not get external aeriel type.

I hate how fragile all new phones are.. 1 drop and they are unrepairable...
and they are gettin smaller and smaller... not everyone wants a phone the size of a thumbtack.

No, progress is phone chat in 4x4 tech...

Either the 6120 classic or E85 or whatever it is.
Cradles are avaliable through force for either and have a passive antenna coupler so still can have external antenna.
Down side being they are bluetooth and you will most likely have to upgrade your data box for it to be compatible with the proper charging cable.
Cheaper option is if your old kit is a nokia Ck-7w then i would just buy a force cradle to suit the 6120 or e85 and buy a cigarette charger and use that for charging. Should cost around a 100 bucks that way.

Yeah I figured that I would have to throw it all out and start over!!!

Ah wrote that quickly at lunchtime, not thinking straight... E51 is what i meant.
Personally i wouldnt touch the ZTE stuff, crap phones and even crappier phone kits.
Nokia is really the only way to go

Hi all

I have had a n51 for bout 9 months. it has copped a load of abuse 9 drops from approx 4 ft from last count. I have really great reception from all most everywhere and i'm up between Mackay and townsville( very Hilly )

It has a metal battery lid and metal around the screen

I would recommend it

I have a ZTE, got it early this year... it's shit.. absolute shit... spewn i got it on a plan!!!!! now i'm stuck with the piece of shit.

I have the 165i and can confirm with the external aerial pluged in by a patch lead you can use it at the main camp at cliffhanger, have been there a few times over the past couple of months helping out.

I have a LG TU550 telstra phone and it has a dirrect aerial cupperling i even have a magnetic aerial that i plug in the back when iam in anouther viecle its got blue tick for country areas it works where outhers dont

Can you get a car kit for the 6120 or the E51?

I have a Telsta F-165 and even though its not the best phone in the world it does have a better car kit then some nokia's do... and preforms well with an external antenna, as for coverage next g is alot better than digital where i live.
