What stops Sierra tail gate from having big spares fitted?

Funny topic name?

Anyway, i've heard that the sierra tail gate (soft top) cant take a large spare (33") and i wanted to know the weak point of the tail gate.

Is it the hinge, the latch, the thin door, or all 3?

Can the door be reinforced?

I never open the tailgate anyway, but could use the tub space.

the tailgate itself and the body in my experience,

tailgates crack and the mounts rip out of the body, has happened to both my sierras only carrying a 30 inch tyre.

i would be plating the body and tailgate

thats some 4mm plate welded in there

and thats what happened

and i had already welded up the tailgate, and i also had to do that same repair to my 97 model

bad pic but there is some 4mm plate in there to :D

i think if you made the gate hinge at the bottom and went double latches on the body you might be onto a winner for load bearing capacity, and gain a workbench/lunch table out in the sticks =)

I'm pretty sure that Built4Thrashing did that to his - It was a fairly easy job apparently...

If you read this B4T, post up some pics!

Cheers all,

Just get the tallest, skinniest spare you can find. Even if it's an inch or two short it'll be ok for emergencys. I've got a bar tread that weighs half as much as a 31 but measures 29 inches tall.

X2. It's not the diameter that's the problem, it's the width. That adds too much leverage and causes the wheel to whip.
