Whoever told you it's "not worth fixing" just doesn't want to do the job. A carburettor overhaul kit shouldn't be hard to find, and cheaper than a new carburettor. If you're handy with tools it's a relatively simple job - but a little time consuming, so it may not be worth paying somebody to do it?

A new carburettor would be difficult to find, and probably $$$$.

A second hand carburettor may work better for a while, but how long before it's in the same condition as yours?

Your dud accelerator pump is likely to be a diaphragm with a hole - simple to replace.

Overhaul your carburettor (new gaskets/seals/diaphragms etc.) for the price of the kit, and you'll have a known entity which should serve you well for the life of your vehicle. Give it a try - worst case, you're out for the cost of the kit and in the same position you're currently in. Best case, you'll end up with a carburettor as good as new, and a better understanding of how it works - handy for troubleshooting engine problems in the bush.
