ok so i did the stupid thing of buying a 3ltr patrol without reading into them about 10 months ago.
at the time i needed a new car and wasnt fussy and this hasnt exactly been the best thing for me.
whilst driving along the dag highway in queensland i was overtaking someone on an overtaking lane, up a hill doing bout 130klms and bang she went. Blue smoke billowing out i pulled over and it wouldnt stop, obviously just running on oil so i just stalled it to stop it.
long story short 2 pistons are shattered and the other 2 are cracked aswell as the head has a hairline fracture along it somewhere, and also the turbo has shat itself too apparently.
now with todays money problems and my first newborn well on its way im stuck with wat i should do. should i borrow more money and get a new motor and keep it or sell it. sell it as is and cut my losses and find something a lil cheaper.
if anyone has any helpful ideas as to wat i should do feel free to give some advice, and as for u people who say shoulda got a 4.2 etc. YEH I KNOW NOW!!!. but its too late
anyone who has had a similar problem i could do with some contacts for new motors etc or anything that would help.
cheers and keep on wheeling

is it out of warantee? Keep a log and all receipts. You wont get hardly anything for it without an engine. Just replace it with a 4.2td there are some cheap ones floating around and not very hard to install.
I saw a thread on here that had nissan brisbane selling the engines for about $6500 or something around that new. That will be the quickest and easiest way to go. Plus a new turbo and labour will be around $9 - $10k all up. But for a bit more you can get the 4.2td.
So my opinion replace the engine with a new 1 from nissan (easiest) or repair old engine and sell it. Or replace with the 4.2td and just keep it. It will be reliable as with the 4.2td and worth more to sell.

yeh i was thinking of just puting a 4.2 in her but was a lil unsure about wat i do about all the crap that comes with the 3ltr ie. wiring loom etc. and also if it matches straight up to the gear box.
and as for the ls1 or 2 that would be good if i could but yes with a new born on the way that is def out of the picture haha

for a conversion drive in drive out using a GU td42 wreck (whole car, so you can sell off the other parts) your looking at around 10K. to put in a new 3.0 your looking at about 10K drive in drive out. to do an LS1 your looking at 12K drive in drive out. to rebuild your 3.0 your looking at prolly close to 10K drive in drive out with new turbo and pump etc.
it is really just a shit of a situation. really depends on what you want to do, they will all cost about the same to do but will make selling prices different. LS1 if done right will be the best, td42 will put some people off as it is still a conversion. the 3.0 is shit but it is still standard

Give steve "killa_lux" a call. He's on the sunny coast and does all the Ls1, ls2, duramax ect.. Engine conversions. Real wiz with wirring. He'll tell you straight up how easy, how long, and how much it will cost for a td4.2 conversion.
But usually he say you have to source your own engine... Steve 0404811498

Flexytj - Ha ha haa. How many baby bonus kids = a LS2. Can see it now. Sorry kids, no clean clothes for you today so your wearing bed sheets, but the good news is "I can get you to school in 2 minutes flat". And the kids responce "YAY!!!"
That price is with you supplying the engine. Buy and rebuild about 7 - 8k. New 1 with coil packs, lead etc etc... 9 - 10K. On average its about 19 - 20k for a LS2 done. Im sick of people asking me how much I got mine done for. And then come back to me with "I can get it done for about half that" pfffft. Goodluck dreamer

surely you can get a motor reasnobly cheap from wreckers from one thats been rear smashed and written off. may take some hunting then ppay a good mechanic cashies to get it fitted... thats providing you can get away with it for maybe 8 total... dunno... maybe unrealisitic...?
cash talks in today climate

Otherwise you wil be bighting bullet and spending the dollars.... what year model is it? dont think i read it? this may alter things a bit.. eg if 98- 200 prob only worth 9-11 blown for someone keen on project car...
newer ones more obviously but cant imagine people will to pay more for something younger when they will have to put new motor in anyways..
not sure if this makes sense...but hey... my 2nd 3 l has not blown up yet

Hi Brendan, sorry to hear of your misfortune, if you are ok with the tools, there is an in chassis engine rebuild kit available from engine australia for around $1500, they also sell the cylinder head for about the same.
There is a member of the Patrol 4x4 forum who has rebuilt his motor using these parts and has been very happy with the results. Here is a bit of a write up that he did just over a year ago, I think he has done around 40k since the rebuild.
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthre ... post120921
Just make sure that you install an EGT and boost gauge to prevent it from ever happening again.
Cheers

td42 could be done real cheap. Depends if you want turbo or not.
All td42 are esentially the same, zd30 and td42 manual gearbox is same. so essentially a bolt in.
I'm not sure how much wirings different but you dont need much to run a td42.
An old td42 is still more reliable then a zd30.

honestly, would you risk putting another one in ??
goto auctions, buy rolled 4.2 and you have everything you need for the conversion.
new grenades are $7k in a crate..

ZD30 and TD42 use diff engine mounts
so not quite bolt in

Then you'll be looking at rebuilding that 1 aswell. Diesels dont like to be upside down at all.

first thing what year is it.......
has it got extras.....
how much you still owe......
how much did you pay.....
what job do you need it for.....eg towing, camping
sorry for the personal bits but trying to work money in my head , as so i can give my opinion on what to do,
i have done 6 or more zd30 to td42 conversions also rd28 to td42,
there are some things you have to be careful with......depending on the year it can be very costly....

lol better have quadruplets then
If you can get some guidance from guys like Giantracing, and swap in a TD42 for a price that's not a complete killer, you may actually come out okay in the end in terms of total vehicle value.
