2.8 TDi engine

I recently bought Patrol from 1999. year with 2.8 Turbo diesel intercooled engine. It has 170000 kilometers.
The cars is accelerating great and has plenty of top end power. I tryed it on the road and it pulls up to 160 km/h with ease.
One thing is bothering me....it's not starting good. When I want to turn the engine on even if it's hot I need to hold the key for 3 seconds at least to start it. When it's cold....in the morning it starts after few long tryes and then the grey smokey cloud goes out off the exhaust.
I've checked glow plug connections and it's got power when I rurn the key. I am confused cause the car won't start even if the engine is hot (emmediately after driving).
Anyone have any cluess about that to help me?

I have same motor in my GQ and it starts good when cold but worse when hot i thought it being warmed up would help the starting of the car but seems to be other way round hmm

There are a few threads about this on the patrol forum.

Mine is the opposite, a bitch to start when cold but that is to do with the glow circuit, I just haven't got around to fixing it.

Meh..... It comes in handy.

Thinking of the Wonnangatta arsehat thread in gen chit chat, a couple of years ago a bunch of arsehats arrived late and decided they would camp right next to us, behave like carnts all night and set their tents up with about 10 metres from the back of where my truck was parked.

Come 8am, the next morning we had packed up and were moving on. There was no sign of life coming out of camp arsehat, so I put the truck in neutral and we rolled it backwards so my exhaust was pointing into their tent from about half a metre. Gave it plenty of throttle, no glow and started her up and filled their tent with diesel smoke and fumes through their open tent window.

Mine had the same problem, fitted an advance plate to the injector pump for the warm start problem, new glow plugs for the cold start, and no problem since

What is advance plate????
I'll change glow plugs and see what will happen then.
I looked in the serviece manual and find out that the cooling temp sensor is in connection with high pressure fuel pump via main ECU and that could be the cause also

Be warned. The glow plugs are damn big $$$ :x
Test them and only replace what you need to.

Common problem with the injector pumps , the plate was a nissan fix to get them out of warranty before the pump needed to be done . :x :bad-words: Nissan part No :09621-80901AU You will also need o'ring 16826-V0700 Doesn't fix it for ever so start saving the money to have the pump done .
