just after some advice. ive found a gq patrol, seems to be in top condition. only concern was when the gear lever was in gear (didnt matter which one) there was quite a bit of play in it. i could move it around a bit, but couldnt pop it out of gear.
secondly when it was in 4wd and hubs locked, with the wheel at about 70% lock i could feel resistance or friction whilst trying to turn, i noticed it in low and high 4.
is ther anything else you can think of that might be owrth a look. im getting a vehicle inspection done just thought id ask some people with more experience
thanks.

Dont take it to ny old workshop, make sure they're a 4x4 specialist.
Also, just because someone is advertised as a 4x4 specialist, it doesn't mean they know everything about 4x4's.
I'm pretty sure there's a buying guide on here somewhere - but i'll have to dig round for it later.
There shouldn't be too much play in the gearstick, mine is quite firm. You will feel "some" resistance in the steering and driveline while it is in 4x4, even moreso if you're on bitument or hard packed gravel.

is this your first GQ,
you probably will find a bit more play in them than say a new hyundai getz. the couple i have had have always had a bit of play. and is common to feel a bit of resistance when locked in.

From memory, theres a nylon bush that wears out in where shifter goes into box.
If its the bit Im thinking of, it wasnt hard to change, and wasnt expensive.
but yes, go have it inspected by someone who knows

$12 (from memory) paid to nissan, a socket (12mm?) and a pair of internal circlip pliers will fix this. (nylon bush on bottom of shifter leaver)

play in gearlever - normal (to a degree)
resistance in steering in 4wd - might have an auto locker

Sounds like a good healthy nissan LSD binding up the 4wd system , was it only on the bitumen ? Remember the front and rear wheels will turn at different speed and there is no centre diff in the transfer case to allow that so it will bind up .

yeah was on the bituman. i managed to get a hold of a guy that used to work for nissan when these first came out and went through it like ive never seen. he said pretty much what you guys have said, wind up in the 4wd system, and need to replace the bush at the base of the gear leaver.
car seems to drive great on gas and petrol. not sure on putting a snorkel straight in. it has a round air filter ontop of the carbie, not the filter enclosed in the usual black box over to the guard. is this very hard to change so i can put a snorkel on?
thanks for the replies, been very helpfull

It will bolt straight in, providing you dont have dual batteries. Check out my members thread for pics and stuff.
