Idles fine, but won't rev?

I suck at teh carbs.

When I give it some choke (block off the top of the carb with a rag) & start it up with some accel i get some revs like it gets up 4k+, but only for a few seconds, then it will sound like it's not getting enough fuel or is getting too much air & start to stall...
Then when I remove choke it starts up & revs, but again, only for a couple of seconds, then it will only idle, and trying to rev it above 2000 it starts to sound like its cold & getting too much air & wants to stall...

Help?
(for the nazi's, there are just TOO many carb threads with specific different little probs to search & sift through, plus i know nothing about them...)

I would look to a big air leak, far too much air and not enuf fuel.

Do you have a gas torch, or an oxy cetaline, or can you get one, if not, a can of start ya barsted.

Whichever, spray it around the carby, if there is a vacume leak, the fuel from the gas, cetaline, or start ya barsted will give instant rev rise, and, problem found.

Swap leads 2 and 3 around and backfire it through the carby a few times. Then swap leads 2 and 3 back to normal and see if this fixes your problem. If there is any crap blocking any ports or jets in the carby, this may fix it, otherwise you may have to pull it off and rebuild.
Oh, and check you fuel filter isn't blocked and that the fuel pump is delivering enough petrol up to the carby

Check to make sure all your vacuum hoses are in place. on the manifold (there are only 5 gazillion of them to check)

Check your fuel filter for crud (if its clear this is easy, if not just buy a new one).

If the filter is full of crud (or you could just do this anyway to be sure), then take the fuel bowl off the carby and clean it. The fuel bowl is on the front of the carby (for a better description i'd need a photo I think).

WRT comment above about the radiator, this is to do with the auto choke, as it uses the water that passes through the carby, so re-bleading your coolent system may also be worth a shot (coolent hose comes into the back top of carby, blead here, as it is the highest point in the cooling system).

These 3 things have fixed every problem Ive ever had with my 1.3 carb. Cant be sure it will fix everyones though.
