GQ front axle upgrade

As most of you may already be aware of, a late model GU axle (with the big CVs) is VERY difficult to get here in Panama. However I can get ahold of a bent one for a fair price. My plan is:
1. Get my GQ diff out.
2. Cut the GQ and GU swivel hubs out. Weld the GU swivel hubs to the GU housin. This in order to use the GU CVs with the GQs inner axles (GU axles are longer and won't fit. I'll take the oportunity to rotate the swivel hubs and gain caster.
3. Reinforce the GQ housing.
What do you think ? Feasible ? Any input is greatly appreceiated.

Forgot to mention that I'll take the chance to replace all seals and paint the housing

Just to avoid confusion. This is what I'm callin swivel hubs here:
I'm not sure if this is the proper term. Am I right ? I know the spanish name (cocobolas)
This is the one I plan to cut out of the GQ hosung and use the GU one in order to be able to use GU cvs. Guess I'll also have to use the GU knockle flange:

The difference in width in a GU to GQ is all the swivel housings. The axle housing is the same. You will still need to use GU axles. May aswell just use a complete GU

sounds like a lot of effort for such a small strength upgrade? just get a set of welded/ringed cv's for the GQ. They will be as strong if not stronger than a GU cv and a fraction of the cost. A good welded cv will be about the breaking strength of the inner axles, and as GU and GQ have the same diameter and strength inner axles this will be the limiting factor. The other thing to upgrade it the free wheeling hub, the strongest option is the early GQ drive flange, they are nearly twice as strong as a GU cv, and stronger than a chromoly style cv.
Search for welded cv's theres heaps of info, especially on pirate4x4

sounds feasable, but I would just use the GU axles, after all you can get the extra width very easily with all the work you are going to have to do, its only about 40mm from memory anyway, so not much

30mm per side.
I have broken 4 ringed gq cv's and no gu cv's, I did explode a gu auto hub though.
On a test rig there may not be much strenth difference between gq and gu but I have found the gu to be much better in the ruff, may be stronger whilst on turn?
