im looking to start a buildup of a 40 which will either be a ford or chev v8 onto a late 60 series gbox&transfer to late 60 series diffs.
i am no expert when it comes to v8's so thats why im asking .
looking at either a cleavlend 351 or a 350 chev? which engine is more suitable for low down torque , and hp?

please if there is another topic covering this question can you please point it out to me rather than giving me greaf
cheers hixi

GM Performance 502

I would go the chev. Everone does it making it cheaper and easier for you. Power and torque all comes down to what varient of the engine you use and what cam etc.

Ford guys are going to say Ford and GM going to say GM.
I would say spares for chev are more plentiful.

Probably comes down to what you get cheapest. I've had a bit to do with both types and they're almost equal in reality. The chev will end up being physically smaller and slightly lighter...

Hixi, more chev engine performance bits about, and they are a bit lighter and narrower than the cleveland. I would consider the windsor over the cleveland as they rev better.

Depends on the power you are expecting to make.

chev engines are more expensive than a clevo, to buy.
Chev's need performance heads, dissy's, etc, where Clevo heads and factory electronic dissy is good for over 400hp, with good torque.
Chev aftermarket heads are dearer than a set of ported 2V heads, with 4V valves, with roller rockers.

400hp or less, the clevo is a clear winner. Dissy is at the front, for ease of use, and for firewall clearance. It can be sealed for water/mud ingress.

chev it,

a better engine for a 4wd for a start with the dizzy at the back.
you will have no firewall clearance issues with a chev in a 40.
SBC is a smaller engine than a clevo and lighter.

I'm a mopar man but I put a chev in mine instead of a ford or chrysler engine simply because of it's smaller physical size & availability to get parts at the right price.
