Help: 2.6 won't run after adding snorkel

So a friend has just put a snorkel on his Paj, 2.6 carby, it'll idle fine and rev fine, but as soon as he tries to drive the car it coughs and splutters.

Now, it's been running fine with a half clogged pod filter before the snorkel was attached, so does something need adjusting? If so, what and where?

If you put the old filter back on, it runs fine again. Is it getting too much air now and not enough fuel?

I have no idea about carbies :)

Nothing jumps out at me - but he shouldn't need to adjust anything.

Obvious answer would be a severely clogged snorkel - but I can't think of an easy way to check for that, other than a vacuum gauge. Can you install a temporary gauge for testing?

It could be a problem with vacuum lines not connected properly? But I can't think precisely how this could be a problem, unless a line has been left open when the snorkel is connected? Sucking in enough air downstream of the venturi to cause the mixture to lean out?

Thanks for the ideas Scott, the snorkel is a brand new homemade one. I asked if he had knocked off another hose but he reakons no.

I would suggest a carburettor overhaul as it runs fine with the clogged pod on it creating a vacum in the carburettor like a choke would giving a rich mixture... that is assume hes snorkle is ok in design.. what filtration system is being used with the snorkle setup

He ended up adjusting the timing and it seemed to be fine, we'll see how it goes offroad this weekend.. The snorkel has a new pod filter sitting on the top.

Methinks his whole car needs a tune up, but that's another story :)
