LONGFIELD verses TRAIL GEAR

I see Trail Gear have brought out there own 30 spline axles and cv's.
(and CHEAPER than Longfield's)

The "Dirty 30's"
These Dirty 30’s are made out of 100% 4340 chromoly and are precision polished to remove any imperfections that may cause stress risers. The ball bearings are manufactured out of the highest quality attainable in chrome steel ball bearing manufacturing, AISI 52100 is the standard of material used. The 30 spline axle shafts are 100% chromoly with a polished seal surface.

These parts have undergone years of extensive in-house and field testing and we are proud to share the results with you. The average failure rate was consistently at 8500 ft. lbs. of applied torque at a 30 degree angle. They were also field tested at the Hammers in our competition FToy and other buggies and trucks with no failures to report. In fact, we feel so confident about the quality of these Dirty 30’s that we are offering them with a no questions asked lifetime warranty.

What do you guys think??????

Update on research

Longfield's "30 spline" - at 40 degrees of angle will break at between 8900 - 9000 foot lbs.

Trail Gear's "Dirty 30's" - at 30 degrees of angle the average failure rate was consistently at 8500 foot lbs.

Both cover LIFETIME WARRANTY

Longfield still have it arms up.

How much cheaper are they?

Last I heard Longs didn't have a lifetime warranty anymore, or did they reinstate it?

I’m trying to decide between the two at the moment. I think I’ll end up with the dirty 30’s as said above it has the life time warranty. $1249 for the dirty 30’s and $1479 for the longs through Locktup.

at that price difference, its not enough twisting of the arm to stray from the longfields.

Longs have more angle too. 40* verses 30*. Big difference.

It says the Trail Gear 'Dirtty 30s' break at around 8500 ft/lbs of torque, But I wonder how much twist the axle can take?

On the Longfield side for there 30 spline ones it says 8900-900 ft/lbs of torque with up too 120degrees of twist! and about 90degrees of twist for there short side shaft. (according to the graph)

The degrees of twist is important in real life, as usually things are broken under shock loads, and the twisting of the axle acts to dampen the sudden load.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this is my understanding of it.

Both are great axles. Both have a great warranty. I have seen both axles in action at the Hammers. I'm pretty sure Chris is running a set of Dirty 30's in his truck now. I run a lot of tight trails with huge rocks and I run the old Bobby Long 30's and I don't really see where 40 degrees would have made much of a difference. Especially with a Detroit in the front.

Here is a video of a dude running Dirty 30's with 36x12.5 TSL's and a welded front. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-lVbcenQ5E

You can also see axle breaking video of the Dirty 30's http://www.trail-gear.com/birfield.html
