lockright questions

Does anybody know what the go is with the lock right & ez locker diff couplers? I see you can purchase the locker and then for a extra charge you can get the couplers. What do these do? Are they essential?

Also I see you need to upgrade to a 4 pin carrier to fit a locker to a post 1989.5 sierra front diff. Has anybody had experience with this? Did you just get a older centre or what?

Can't help you there I would personally save and use an air locker. :)

i bought the lockright with the couplers as apparently the old couplers are the first items to wear out when the locker is in. I think this is it as i am not mechanically minded. the locker is working fine, but i wouldn't put one on the front as you will constantly be correcting the steering and you will be hearing some loud noises when turning especially full lock when the locker releases.

The Lockright for seirras comes in two forms , one supplied with couplers , the couplers are a replacment item for the side gears in your diff ,

The above type needs to be either front or rear as the couplers have the axle spline in the centre, and as you might be aware the front and rear axles of a zook have a different spline count ,

If you obtian a lockright that dosn,t use the couplers , it can be used in the front or rear as long as you have the four pin carrier in the front.
This lockright retians your original side gears , The side gears of the four pin carrier front or rear are both of the same diameter and cut
the difference only being the the axle spline area.

Thanks Dozoor Jacka & Sam, for the info.
I went to the 4x4 super show today at rosehill, and got a very good price on air lockers, so i'm going that way now, I didnt get them today as I got my series 3 and will have to wait a while for the lockers but my brother (nelligen) got a air locker for his coily and the guy is going to do the same price for me.

Its a good direction to go Xtr , The s3 will make it a lot easier on your zook , you won,t have to hammer into things .

And the air lockers are more civilised then the other types of lockers .

Xtreem,

Assuming you don't have a coiler too - you may want to consider getting the back diff welded and then fitting the air locker to the front. Then you will have twin lockers (until you can afford to get an air locker for the rear if you decide to do so).

Could be worth thinking about.

Yeah Greg not to keen on welding it as this thing does heaps of road k's around back streets doing deliverys and heaps of three point turns etc. I'm going twin Air lockers, but I get what your saying it could do temporarily as the centre is replaced with the ARB anyway.

Exactly... seems like an easy way to get there doesn't it.

hey - do a little test - get your brothers car, lock the rear air locker and have a drive and try some 3 point turns etc - that'll show you how bad/not bad it would be with the rear always locked.

Yeah I have had several locked cars including a Datto 1600 which was ok Datto 260z which was absolutely terrible and my 1200 ute which has a spool in it and its really good. I had a lj80 with a detroit which was good aswell. I will see what happens, probably not worth it though as I will have the ARB shortly.

It seems the leaf sprung ute handles the locker much better than the coil sprung 1600 & 260z. And if all goes well the Zuk will be riding on coils soon so I might just wait.
