Gday all

I had my 60 1984 5 speed serviced a week ago and the mech said that my gearbox was low but that he filled it he said it was leaking out the rear main seal. I took the old girl on a run about 500 ks total. About 200k from home I started to notice a bit of whirring in second and third gears when the motor was lugging a bit or when slowing down. It was dark and I had to drive home. When I got home the next day I checked my gearbox fluid and it was a bit low. Two pump fulls of oil and she was totally quiet when driving. Today I started noticing a slight whir again. I imagine it is low again. DOes the whir indicate damage? How hard is it to replace the rear seal?

Thank you

Chris

the noise is because it is running dry. Have you got g/box to transfer equaliser hose? are the breathers blocked up?

Ok I wasn't sure what an equalizer hose was so I did a bit of searching on the net and found out. I don't have one. I will have to look at the breathers. How do I check them?

Thank you

fit up a hose. breathers just pull them out and blow through them.

Had an equaliser hose in my 60 when i got it years ago...... It came straight out!!
I would have all seals replaced when taking out a part like that, it will hardly change the total cost of the job, and will remain reliable for another 200,000kms or more.
