ok, no smart ar$ses....don't tell me "if you're a tool, it's difficult"....
what tools are required to change a thermostat in a td42 and how difficult might it be for a relative novice but who picks things up pretty quick?

Shit easy. Two 12mm (i think) bolts on the housing, pull the thermostat housing off, replace your thermostat, bolt the housing back on, bleed coolant system.
You may or may not need to replace your gasket. Depends if it comes off in one peice or not.
Its a 5 minute job.

5 min job as long as you dont snap a bolt, just go easy when undoing them, I always use never seaze or similar when reassembling.

isnt there three bolts?
if you can find the thermostat housing, you can get it off
always found a deep socket set made life easier than trying to do it with a spanner
