Might be a silly Q, but what have ppl replaced the stock Vitara carby with. (if at all) The standard Mikuni needs an overhaul/tune (full of shit & runs like a chaff cutter)and no-one up here wants to touch it......
A 'carby specialist' reccomended that I replace it with a Weber. Any ideas or comments......

Probably best just cleaning it out and putting a kit through it. Not sure about the Vit engine but the Sierra's are very hard to get right with a weber because of flooding issues on steep inclines "offroading" Some people say it can be done with different float and float adjustments but it sounds pretty difficult. I would imagine you will run into the same problem on the Vit.
When I had my LJ80 with Toyota 5k I run a modified gemini carby and it worked a treat.

Just bought a kit for mine from suzisport - since "carby specialistS" wanted about $400 for a rebuild - I paid about 1/8th that for a kit.

for $400 I'd put efi on it instead

I can't get EFI for $400, but if I was being quoted $400 for a carby rebuild you can get a full EFI system for under $1000... less if you can score a good secondhnad EFI system so you only need the manifold, injectors and pump and not all the other sensors and stuff.
