while i was 4wding i noticed a clunking noise coming from my car. i managed to kind of narrow down the location. i have a feeling it is coming from the front right hand wheel. when i undo the hubs and drive in 2wd or not on a bumpy road it stops, is it a dead CV?

Sounds like it. Jack the front end off the ground and lock the hub in then spin the wheel. Depending on how bad it has broken you should be able to hear it even may not be able to turn the wheel as the CV may be binding in the housing.
If you are still driving it around be aware that it can affect your steering.

Just be careful cause the broken bits of the cv bell can jam in the housing and bind the steering up.

Were the wheels spinning and sudenly get grip especially at full lock?
I've had one brake just nudging up to a hill. Obviously had been overstressed on a previous trip.
They are a week point in the hilux drivetrain. You can buy stronger axles and CV's from companies like
www.locktup4x4.com.au. It sounds like you have not broken one before though so I would replace it with a standard one as aftermarket is not cheap.
