Turbo the TB42.
that is all...........
Just kidding.
I say that because of a number of reasons. The TB42 is a tough motor, and likes being turboed, it has low enough compression ratio to run decent boost. Its relatively simple to do, and you dont have to change engine mounts, or get adaptor kits for gearboxes or anything like that.
The RB30, yes you would get good power from a turbo rb30, but would need to change as per above to put it in, may as well turbo the tb42 instead.
A 350 chev or 304 holden motor sound like a good idea, but still, alot of mucking around. I have seen in person probly 5 or 6 GQ's and 80 Series' with the conversions done (and one rangie but i wont count that) , and i cant say ive seen one yet that im impressed with, or that actually runs properly, or spends more time 4wding than it does being fixed.
The LS1 you would be doing well to get all the extra things that need doing for 10 grand. The engine would go in and probably run, its all the extra stuff that goes with it that you need to think of.
So i would be leaning towards a turbo tb42, theres plenty of parts around, plenty of good advice and people who have done this to help.

I'll do it for you for $9,990.
Send PGS a PM - he might know of a reputable workshop up your way.

you will definately get it turboed for under 10k. Drive in drive out.
It depends on what YOU prefer, some guys get off on the sound of a V8 and some (like me) like the pick up and sound of a turbo. TB42 will have a different power band to a V8 but very addictive.
If I had to do mine again I would still turbo it. I have heard lots of guys say they wouldnt do a V8 conversion again.
Comes down to what YOU really want.

dont bother with a rb30, i spent a heap on mine and 6 mths later got the s**ts with it and pulled it out and replaced it with a ls1 and auto, best thing i ever did. if you can do most of the work yourself you could do it for around 10 grand or pm killalux he should be able to give you a drive in drive out price but youll probably need a few more grand, but in my opinion well worth it and when you get power hungry later the ls1 is cheap and easy to get more hp. killalux's 80 series had 240hp at the wheels on 35's and auto with a mild economy tune.
i wouldn't expect much change from 10 grand to turbo the 4.2, to do it right you'll need all the efi intake, aftermarket ecu, fuel pumps, clutch. and i would expect it to big quite heavy on the juice. my rb30 turbo averaged 3km/l where the ls1 gets me about 5-6km/l.

I assume you're not interested in a DIY job?
By the sounds of it, there arent too many tuners in the brissy area. Who do the comp guys use up that way?

I'd stick a one of our 350 Chevy engines into the truck, for the same money you spend on turbo charging etc you can get a turnkey small block!!!
turbo

hey mate i no a heap of people that have got turbo kits for patrols
from A1 mechanical and exhaust its in bundy but he does an awsome job depends if u want it intercooled or not but give him a ring the blokes name is glassy he has done heaps of tunes for me in the past and i cant complain
and yeh the V8 conversion would be fun you cant trust it on a creek crossing you pay more rego insurance it will be deerer to run and it will probly wreck your resale value.
im getting 10L to 100km at the moment in my turbo patrol
cheers Ross

Hey pom300,
I guess it comes down to personnal preference, I have supplied over 70 engines to very happy customers. There's quite alot of them who run straight gas setups which will match the fuel effieciency of you're truck.
I'm in the process of building up a serious truck, and I'm putting in a 502 big block which will run on straight gas. There's no way I'd be running it wthout a gas setup based on the efficiency.
The turbo'd 4.2 straight gas setup sounds good also.
Cheers,
Mark

Go the turbo!!!!!!!!!!!
You cant beat the low down torque they provide and the reliability with water as mentioned earlier.
I just finished my DIY install. All new quality parts were used. Garrett turbo, PWR water2 air cooler. Custom 3" dump and exhaust. Mod plated and dyno tuned for just over 5g's. Cost got a little out of hand but I dont care. Nearly doubled in power and torque and tows my fully loaded camper sweet.
I woudnt have it any other way.

i'm curious to know how the turbo motor is better in creek crossings? the tb42 runs a dizzy where the ls1 has sealed coil packs and no dizzy.

Hey DanwinGQ,
I used to have a GQ 4.5ltr with a turbo charger, it was great and comfortably did what it had too; like all petrol engines you always have to look into the waterproofing aspect??
However most people spend around $10,000+ on f'n around with a standard factory engine to make it better, you'd be better off getting a brand new custom built 350 Chevy small block for about $10,000.
You can't beat the torque, and the sound of a V8!! Guaranteed 400lbs of torque from around 2500 rpm onwards.
Cheers,
Mark

well i know a turbo motor can take a little water as it just vapourises it turns it to steam and cleans ur engine a little but i my self dont understand how its more reliable in water.. somone tell us

The only way gas could be more reliable in water would be if you factored in fuel contamination. Also, gas fuelled cars should have/are more likely to have a fully sealed intake as opposed to petrol, as the tiniest of vacuum leaks play havoc with your mixtures on gas.
Turbo or no turbo, it makes no difference - if your ignition system gets wet, it gets wet. If your motor sucks in water, it sucks in water.

You'd be pushing the $10k budget on anything but a stock TD42T, and did all of the work yourself.
A TB42 turbo goes plenty hard enough for most people. Plus parts/motors are cheaper to replace when things go south...

TB48E out of a series 3 on patrol. With the std 5spd auto or your 5spd manual, it would be a HUGE power increase over the TB42.
Its Nissan and HIGHLY reliable! And it can be gassed!!

The 5spd auto might be good for the 180kw engine. But it dosent like the 300rwkw engine I have heard. Andrew from OnTrack killed a number of 5psds autos.
Would be nice if it worked or could be built strong enough. 5psd with flappy paddles to shift.

Sorry guys, I thought we were talking diesel. My bad. Thats why I mentioned the water bit. I love my diesel. But if I was to go petrol yeah. V8 no doubt. Alloy LS2.
