sounds like your clutch is slipping, did it make a bang or anything like that before it lost drive?

What happens in 4wd?

When you "change gears" with the engine running/no clutch, do they crunch at all?

no they don't crunch and in 4wd no go

Well, I don't know what the problem is, and the only guesses I can make won't make you happy.

The change in whining noise (with different gears) suggests to me that at least some shafts in the gearbox are turning, which suggests the clutch works - but I'm not convinced, given that the gears don't crunch. Do the gearbox whining noises stop if you push in the clutch pedal?

I suspect the problem is either the connection between gearbox and transfer, or within the transfer itself. I'm beginning to think that, as a minimum, the transfer will need to come out.

My next test would be to all four wheels off the ground, and checking which shafts turn with which, with the transfer in different positions e.g. 2H, 4H, 4HLc.

thank you very much for your help so far scott it is much appreciated
i'm not that mechanicaly minded that i can fix it myself but it gives me an idea to what the problem might be so i don't get ripped off when i bring it to the mechanics
again thank you very much
