is it possible to charge a 6V battery with a normal 12V charger? will it do any major damage to either the bat or the charger?

That's pretty much it.

In an emergency, if you're desperate and you know what you're doing, you could get some charge into a 6V battery with a 12V charger. But it would be a last resort action, because it won't be good for the battery, and the charger probably won't enjoy it either.

Hi scott and macca81, many 12 chargers would not damage a 6v battery because many 12 volt chargers are designed not to charge any battery that has a voltage below 8 or 9 volts, so macca, if you try this and the charge does not seem to be working, it may be doing exactly what it’s supposed to.

Another stunt you can try is to get a 6 volt globe and wire it in series with the battery and then connect to a 12 volt source, but keep checking the voltage at the battery terminals.

When the battery voltage is low the globe will glow brightly and as the battery charges, the globe will get duller and when the battery voltage gets up around the 7 volt mark, your battery should be close to, if not, fully charged.

The size of the globe will govern how quick the battery charges, the bigger the globe’s wattage, the quicker the charge.
