I've gotta tow another car - just a light car, less that 1000kg probably. However, i'm just wondering whether i'll be able to with my car. It's a 3L pajero but running 35s with no reduction gearing. Reckon it'll work?

x 2
including trailer you will be towing more like 1.5 tonne or a little more, which is probably not legal but the car will do it.
the tyres will make hill starts harder etc but the rest of the time it will just mean you drive to keep the revs in the torque region for your motor.
I towed well over 2 tonne with a 2.8 diesel which wasnt ideal the only real problem i had was traffic lights on a steep hill. had to use low range to avoid doing a clutch.

When I killed my Vit, a mate towed me from Bega to Sydney on a dual axle trailer in his SWB Paj on 32's.

If you have and can be bothered, putting some 31's or similar on will put less strain on your engine and trans but it will do it with 35's.

Wouldn't it be crap on and off road NOT towing with 35's and no reduction gearing?

I'm guessing you are going from ~31" tyres to 35" tyres...
I went from 26" to 31" tyres and towed 2 tonnes (12'x6'x7' furniture trailer) 2600km in 40 degree heat and a 20-30 knot headwind in 2.5 days in a Kia Sportage (2 litre 4 cyl - 94 kw/175Nm).
I would say you would have a decent shot at it...

Auto or manual ?
If it is a n auto keep an eye on you tranny fluid temps .. otherwise I dont see an issue.
The 3 litre is no powerhouse, but it is far from gutless.
