My old man recently picked up an 80's series cruiser 96 model, which is blowing lots of smoke when started. Is this normal with all 80's series? The smoke dies out after a short drive.
Cheers

Probably the valve stem seals are worn, oil seeps into the cc when you turn the motor off , when restarted it burns that little bit out and is fine again.

My 80 (225k's) smokes on startup but also blows smoke badly on long descents, ie when engine braking. Is that the valve stem seals also or does it indicate wear elsewhere?
cheers

It means that probably both your rings and stem seals are gone.

My 80 has been blowing valve stem smoke since i have had it.. (8 years)
if i leave it idling for a while it will blow a puff when i give it a rev (bugger all really) and if im doing long decents it will blow a puff as i Acc at the bottom...

puffs of smoke on decel down a hill is a sure sign of valve oil
startup smoke can be as well, also if you let it idle for ages and it starts to smoke.
white/grey smoke on startup can be a weak cylender not firing the diesel hot enough at first
blue will be oil
black is overfuelling
