Anyone Regret Getting a rear Locker (Losing LSD)

Thinking about getting a rear air locker to compliment the front.
Anyone done this and regret losing their LSD?, is it that noticeable when driving ?

Not really keen on Auto Lockers

wouldnt the lsd function normally untill you engage the air locker? or do they remove the lsd to fit a airlocker?

The LSD is removed to fit the air locker ! Dont regret having the air locker in the rear at all. Yes and they are much better than the auto lockers as you can turn them on and off when needed. But the auto lockers do work well as a locker !! Go the air locker in the rear you will not regret it!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

I actually do miss my LSD, mind you upgraded to an AIRlocker because i blew my LSD apart.

If you have lots of power at the rear wheels, you have to sometimes have to engage the locker whilist driving, i noticed i have to do this in the wet, or slippery areas otherwise i single spin and thats not good to do in an air locker...

I am in the process of pulling my rear locker out and putting the LSD back in. I find with the locker that it either pushs straight ahead or slides. It makes the handling much less refinded and uncontrolable at speed. At low speed in the dry it is great but in the wet with power it sucks. I have to have it in or one wheel just lights up and you go nowhere and then with it in it either won't turn or it slides.
The worst thing I ever did was fit the rear locker.
Sure my truck isn't really standard and has a lot more hp than most and I've done many years with rear LSD and front locker so that is what I was use to but after 3 comps with the rear locker you can keep them.

For going slow in the dry then they are great but if wet you don't need it and if going fast they make the truck twichy and unpredictable.

My opinion is rear LSD and front air locker is by far the best combination. That is based on using the same truck with rear LSD and rear locker and wih front locker. So it is a pretty good comparison.

All i can say is NZ conditons, and comps are a lot diffrent to aussy comps and conditions, so it dose make it hard to compair the too. Just my 2cents worth.....

Love my locker, I do miss my lsd rear end, mine was in good condition and made a differance. Had a few people say ' you drove that easy because you got lockers' The look on there face when I told them i did'nt was priceless. Even had one guy have a look for the locker switchs.

Does also depend on the quality/construction of the LSD. Some are better than others and some may as well be an open centre.

Agree,

love the locker but miss the drivability of LSD. If had to start over would have a Detroit built or even consider shimming up rear LSD.

I lock the rear end up all the time when in 4WD. Only have to unlock occasionally. Must be so many Rover experiences and locking centre diff etc.

I run the Air Locker in the front.
The LSD in the rear, shimmed tight, but not too tight that it would squeel on bitumen.
I find this combo works great.

I've got a shimmed LSD in front. Worked as a spool for 5 or 6 trips then started loosening. Still is better than being open. On the rear diff. I've got an air locker. One of the best upgrades. Don't regret at all.

Manual Locker!!! Even though Patrol LSD's are one of the best you'll still only get up to 40% of reduced wheel spin at the wheel with the least traction.
Got a factory locker in mine and would never get an auto locker.

I agree totally and that is why I tried to make the coments re dry conditions vs wet mud. ie Dry the locker is better but wet I hate it.

ALso the other downside, which would rarely occur, is the compressor failing or an airline blowing out = c#$t of atime getting out of a hard section like that.

I don't miss the LSD, there is nothing better than air lockers!
I shimmed up my LSD, it was good but the first time I over did it ( I had to put it in the press to get it back together ). It was nearly a full locker but as it wore in, it would clunk like all hell. I then fitted a smaller shim, it was good but would let me down when rock crawling. from there I got a air locker to match the front. I do notice the inner wheel pick up on corners on the road in the wet, but it is better that when it would kick out sideways due to the LSD.
I have had times when the air lockers have let me down , mainly due to a stick ripping out an air line, like the time I was coming down a hill rutted to the shxx, taking the high side, lockers on, noticed the compressor start up and saw the air gauge dropping, lost both lockers slid sideways and came real close to a roll over. I'm a bit more clued on now, so when it happens I am able to shut down the leaking locker quickly, but still it is a pain in the xxx when it happens, the upgrade air line kit would probably fix this , something I am yet to do.
all in all , air lockers all the way!

Nope never! When I had the Mav' I drove it the same way I do the GU now. On road I noticed no difference because I drive it like the TRUCK it is, and off road, I only engaged it when I felt it would be needed.

Go the Air Locker and as long as your not doing high speed comp work off road or racing drifters on road (    ) you'll find it the best decision you've made.

My car spins 4th gear in the wet on my 31s and 35s.....so u rekon it would be easy with an open diff...lol maybe if it was a 35rwkw model u could make such a comment, but we don't all drive shlt boxes and need more drive on road too
