Has anyone ever used a scroll type air con compressor such as those fitted to V6 commodores as an endless air type compressor ?
I've found heaps of stuff on the Piston types fitted to early fords (York) and Sigmas (Sanden ) but nothing on the scroll types.
I only ask because they are smaller, (important in my install) and more efficiant

Not quite the answer to your question... but i've tried vane compressors and the inability to keep the oil in them was a killer.
I tried recirculating oil traps etc etc..... etc........ ( you get the drift ) with various levels of sucess but in the end none were long term relaible.
Even oil viscosity was a problem, too thin and it pumped around very quickly and created recovery issues too thick and it wouldn't return to the suction side without wasting excessive air to force it back.
Eventaully, I even managed to overheat the oil and carbonize it - which killed compressor number four... or perhaps five.
If scroll types rely on passing oil through the clearances to maintian tip sealing then my guess is that they will suffer similar issues - but its a guess only.

MigfhtyMouse, you are near spot on. Scroll comps do indeed rely very heavily on oil for lub and sealing at the tips. I would image you will suffer similar problems.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to find a piston type one and fit it somewhere.
anybody got one mounted on a holden V8 that can share some pics of how/where they've put it ?

i think Range Rovers Also have the piston type Pump.
They use the same sort of setup as the scroll/vane pumps when doing Air-Bag setups in minitrucks and stuff, from what U understand the Oil ends up in the resoviour tank, and can be drain or recurcirculated back, cant squeeze a small tank in somewhere???
Cant be any/much difference to a Scroll Type Compressor in a Workshop can it??? They dont seem to pump oil through the air lines.
