heys guy last few days i been hearing some noise under the old 60 a new noise i havent herd before

at first i thought i screwed my rear diff, then maybe the gear box
i hear the noise worst when ingear and i take the foot off the gas and under its own power down a hill

tonight i had her up on some stands in 1/2 /3
i could hear the noise in the rear drive shaft/diff maybe? i cant see anything hitting the 2 any ideas?

also is it easy to do the oil seal on the rear diff she is leaking slighly out the front where the flange is

Your pinion bearing (maybe both) are worn which has allowed movement in the companion flange. This results in a leak, and also improper contact between the pinion gear and the ring gear.

The noise you hear is the incorrect gear mesh.

You need to rebuild your diff.

As a temp fix you could tighten the nut holding the companion flange on.

just sounded like sombody hitting the driveshaft with screw driver or somthing

whats arebuil worth or better of grabbing another diff?

I too have a 60 with the same sort of funny sound, I have had it for a few years and has done the same tailshaft noise scince - it does sound like a cross between a screwdriver or rubbing the shaft with a coat hanger, it has allways done it when backing off but is getting lowder lately after giving it a hard time,
BUT the thing with the diff???? both my diffs are new prob only 500ks, rear auto lokka- front cig lokka - rear was rebuilt and has the oversized rock rash flange on the pinion - my diffs do not leak and have no freeplay
my opinion is not diffs - I have no idea what the sound is and have never heard this sound after owning 35 cars/4x4's .

I will be looking at the uni's though, kinda sounds like a dry/siezed needle bearing.
I'll keep you informed - if you find out what it is post it up

yeah no worries , mine origonal diff tho:)

Try removing the rear tailshaft, then driving it while on stands and see if the noise is still there.
If the noise goes then it's either the tail shaft or diff?

Check the tailshaft unis when the shaft is out. Also check movement at the pinion flange.

Its not making a grinding noise? A busted engine mount will cause the motor to torque and the fan to rub on the cowling under load e.g. going up hills. Seen it happen a few times on 60s and other vehicles. Just something to check as my mate thought his front diff or transfercase was screwed but that's all it was.

nah not at all i hear the noise most when in gear going down hills without the foot on the gas,

both gear box mounts and engine mounts look sound no cracks

i had it on stands last night in first gear going and i can hear the noise under its own steam i was right under th car and i can hear the ting noise in drivshat/diff side of things, as i said a screw driver hitting the shaft

since have seen oil leaking out the front of the diff at the flang

when i was driving around and i had the power on and take it off i could hear the gear bangbang back and forth slight bunny hopping storta in the diff so i know theres alot of movment in there

When was the last time you greased up your driveshafts. In the slip joint and at the uni's?

The noise + the leak at the pinion flange almost certainly means its the bearings loose as they are worn(failing)

The noise he describes, going down hill off the gas (so the ring gear is driving the pinion) is exactly what i heard in my HJ60.

Certainly makes sense.

Should really pull it now before it goes bang.

as for greaseing i havent, iv only had her 12 months, i been picking away at other problems, eg leaking gear box, leaking passenger side CV this be the third times ib had to look at it

i'll have to grab a grease gun and grease everything

problem is too the car i got has been a upgraded car

like 87+ body square head lights
, 85 motor gear box
and its reg for 1983 chassi
it has alot of dodgy stuff done to it thats iv slowly chipped away at replaceing and fixing things

makes me think i miss the nissan GQ so much

diff's heyy- I'll be checking mine again -- weidest noise ---- never heard a diff make the noise that mine's doing---

yep like i thought - mine was not diff - it was uni - the rear one was dry as a nun's nasty and two of the end caps had split clean in half - but like i said it was the strangest noise and never heard a uni do that - for at least the last 2 years it had been only making a sound ---

Whatever it is, get it fixed ASAP. My diff made funny noises, then one day on the Ipswich motorway at 100km/hr, the diff seized, locking the rear wheels, spinning me 270 degrees, collecting a light truck in the process and ending on my side. Not a good moment, and obviously cost me more to pay insurance fees, fix entire diff which had been shattered and the panel damage (which I have never fixed), than it would to have the diff rebuilt or replaced. Open centres are cheap as chips so get it sorted.
