all pretty straight forward you

need clutch pedal, mastercyl, lines, slave ,clutch .flywheel manual gearbox either h15x will do just as long as you get the clutch spline to suit ,gearbox cross member front and rear drive shfts

you will also have to relocate the gearbox cross member on the chassis

all pretty easy hardest bit is the cross member

U would have to get the manual suited to the TD as the petrol box would be different ratios???

It s actually not that important only very minamal diference in ratiosdifferent for the na diesel >TD
i have a na diesel box behind my 100 series 1HDFTE in my 80 and it drives great the diesel box helps it crawl better

the petrol and turbo diesels have the same ratios

as i said earlier you just have to watch the input shaft to get the correct clutch plate made

fairly labour intensive, would cost a fair bit at 60 dollars an hour. why do you want to swap to manual? i have a td auto 80 series its awesome offroad. i can sell you a rebuilt auto...

If you were in vic, I'd swap you my 5 speed and new clucth along with all bits and pieces for your auto and bits and pieces.
I'd love to convert to auto. Stronger than manual (when modified), lower reving on highway and a lot easier to control on the rough stuff. Other than down hill, of course.
If I were you I'd stick with the auto. :)

come to think of it, the saharas have the different steering boxes and theres a heap of wired going from the steering box to the auto, the steering changes with speed so you would have to source a manual from a sahara or a gxl steering box and but up with shitty 80 series steering

Does the wiring actually go from steering box to auto. I have a manual Sahara and as far as I know the speed signal comes from the speedo to a control ECU.

By the by I'm only a couple of hours away and if I had the time I'd gladly swap my Sahara manual box for your Sahara auto box!!! Like the guys are saying, why do you want to swap. I'd much prefer to get back to an auto 4WD. Sur ento as good down hills but that depends on how you drive, the size of the hills and how much time you actually spend going down big hills.

the speed signal is derived from the pick up on the transfer via the speedo in the cluster so it will be no problem

for you guys wanting to swap to an auto from manual what year model trucks do you have?
if late model donor you will need to swap the body harness as well to be able to run a late model ect controlled box from a late model truck

besides that i cannot stand autos but that is just my opinion and has nothing to do with anything

Actually I didn't make my comments fully accurate Johnathon, mines a 90 model so it has the mechanical speedo. Do they still have a pick up on the transfer or does all the speed signals come from the speedo after it converts the mechanical signal. Not that I have the time to be serious about a gearbox swap but forgot about the electronics of the later autos. don't think I'd bother putting an early auto in and later would be too much effort.

your auto comment makes me laugh with your simple honesty. I hated autos for years also and used to bag a mate when he went auto years ago. Told him he just needed the bowls hat on the dash. However when I got my 4.8 auto Patrol it was the best thing offroad and I miss it, slush box and all. Great for hanging out the window spotting for yourself while left foot throttling. and the 4.8 donk didn't hurt the fun factor either.

There is no way I would swap my auto for a manual, it is just so easy to drive offroad, obviously the only issue is going down hill however its only $1200 for reduction gears then you would be slower than a standard manual going down hill with all the benefits of the auto. I'm sure it is going to cost alot more than $1200 to swap to the manual box.

yeah the speedo weather cable or 3 wire pick up on the box generates the same signal in the back of the dash so it is quite doable
the early autos (hydraulic ones) are ok from what i have heard they are still 4 speed just not as smart as the electronic ones it is basically the same box just controlled differently

well autos hmm
i have allways liked sports cars and nothing pisses me off more than an auto that will not drop a gear when i want it to
or if it drops back unnessarilly
I just feel more a part of the machine with a manual because i tell it exactly what to do and when
with an auto it seems more like i am sending a request

thats just me i am a petrol head I know i have a problem i have come to accept that and i cannot change that part of me basically I am a knob

I am gunna be one of those old guys you laugh at fanging it thru trafic in his 60's or 70's and hammering it off the lights at every change fast changing and double clutching for no reason at all.

cheers

jonathan

Actually I do agree with you almost entirely johnathon. When the wife wanted a new (cheap) town car it had to be manual especially as it was not overly endowed in the engine department. Before that we had a Cooper S Mini (BMW) and no way was it to be manual. Before that I would never have gone auto in anything and bagged my mate for years till it came time for a new Patrol for work. They had the 5 speed auto 4.8 on test fleet and once I drove that and after seeign how easy my mate was driving his auto Cruiser offroad i was hooked. Would still prefer a powerful auto for 4wding but same I'll never go auto for our road car. Although I'm trying to talk wife into affording a GTI or R32 Golf and their dual clutch, paddle shift DSG gearbox actually looks quite interesting. Best mix of both worlds, at least till I get to test one in the flesh myself.

the proof is in the pudding and it will be most likely a hell of a lot of fun
best of luck with the persuasive powers ;)
