Help changing water pump.

Hi Guys.

I think that my water pump is leaking so have decided it is time to pull it out and put a new one in.

I've never dealt with timing belts before and am a bit worried about pulling it out and putting it back in again.

Are there any hints and tips regarding getting the water pump out and back in as well as removing and replacing the timing belt?

I have read the manual and from what I can understand it is as simple as making sure that the marks all line up with the indicator marks and then tensioning it. How to I get the tension correct and if it isn't spot on will it knacker anything?

why do you need to touch the timing belt to put a new water pump :?

What vehicle is this for?

Hi mate,

Feroza F310. The water pump is held on behind the timing belt. Which is a PITA for someone who is still learning about mechanics.

Relatively simple job, just a bit fiddly.

You'll probably find it easier to remove the radiator so you have a heap more room to work with.

A while since I've done one, but you'll find it easier if you remove the fan, then the timing belt cover. You should then have access to the pump.

You might also find it makes it easier to unbolt the power steering pump for a bit more room. BUT some ps pumps can be a complete PITA to get back onto the bracket. I've had to file a little off the bush on a couple as they simply WOULD not go back in otherwise. Not a huge problem, but one that leaves people frustrated and scratching their heads.

the water pump was the last thing i did on my Fez before i sold it, as others have said .. easy but fiddly, all due to the two dam bolts hiding under the timing cover makes a 15 minute job into a epic :bad-words:

What I did was

1 remove center grill bit
2 remove radiator/shrowd
3 remove fan (so much easier with rad out the way)
4 remove fan and power steering belts
5 remove plastic cambelt cover
6 undo waterpump bolts remove
7 replacewater pump
8 (optional but advisable) replace cambelt (your 99.99% there anyway)
9 replace cambelt cover
10 refit belts/fan
11 refit radiator
12 replace grill

from memory the Cambelt is running right over the top of one of those dam waterpump bolts, however you can carefully get a socket down the side of it and undo it .. i VERY Carefully pulled the cam belt about 1/3 the way off the bottom and top pulleys and that gave me just enough room to pull the bolt out of the hole (or was it studs with nuts .. cant quite remember now :D ..old age you see) but anyway i had to do some jiggling to get it out i remember that .. just rember to push the cambelt all the way back onto the pulleys before you finish .. wouldnt want it spitting off :?

took me about 2 hours and basic hand tools 10/12/14 mm ring spanners and same size sockets from memory

Awesome. Sounds like I was one bolt away as it got dark last night.

I have everything out and the cover removed but I couldn't work out if the belt actually had to come off. The Fez manual says to remove the timing belt which is what I was worried about but if I can get it out without removing the belt that would be great. The timing belt was done not that long ago as I've only put 50,000 on the car since owning it so it can't be that old and it looks fine. I just couldn't get that last bolt off the stud.

It looks like a little patience and determination should see the pump out tomorrow and then I can fit the new pump and the Electric water pump and fingers crossed no more overheating.

If I rotated the timing belt whilst trying to undo the bottom pulley would that have done any damage? I can't see how if the belt was on both top and bottom but it can't hurt to check.

Forgot to say thanks to AJ for the offer of help as it is always appreciated. If I can get the overheating sorted I may just need a hand putting the body lift on :lol:

Is your rig a dark blue/purple with flame decals on the side? If so I rode past it last night.
