Outer Limits 4x4 Board

86 solid axle lux. im pretty sure the axle seals are screwed on the front due to fluid on the outside of the hubs(both sides). as im aware of this problem i dont lock the front hubs in when im out wheeling(so do most things in rwd), i do lock in the front hubs when im stuck, front diff definately has drive to front wheels and seems to work fine but makes a clunking sound.
is this clunking sound due to axle seals?? does my diff have a problem??
if i replace axle seals, should the diff be ok??
i know that with seals being stuffed, the oil in diff will leak out thru seals. i know its hard to tell without most people hearing the noise. maybe some1 has an idea.
this is what happens-
when i lock in front hubs, everything seems to be good. when im driving in 4wd, there is a clunking sound coming from the front end, i have been told that my front driveshaft is cactus- could this be the problem??
front diff definately does have drive and seems to work properly except for the noise.
im hoping that if i replace seals, all should be good.

firstly just get in there and do your hub rebuilds as its gonna have to be done at some stage.

chances are the clunking sound is not your drive shaft - front shafts dont tend to wear as they arent used much.

I would expect the sound is your cvs, is it worse when turning?

when you do you hub kit you have to pull out your cvs so i would suggest either overhauling them while they are out of just replacing them.

you can still wheel with the leaking hubs, just make sure you have enough oil in your front diff before you leave, but best bet is to get in there and do it.

im rebuilding another set now, its not too hard.

nah its not cvs, i know that sound, in my untrained opinion, im thinking because the front still seems to work how it should, replace axle seals and it should be ok, its just got bugger all oil in there.
the front shaft has a rattle(around the dustcover thing in the middle of it) and some1 told me its going to break soon, so i bought a spare, havent changed it yet.
has anyone got any ideas??
