Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi All,

I have a set up ventilated brake disks to fit to my hilux as a little upgrade, but have noticed that one has a grind off one edge - dont ask me how.

my concern is that it might cause imbalance issues, but i dont know.

Will this be better or worse than my current solid disks?

its only worth doing if it will be better than now.

I do quite a bit of towing so there would be some benefit in this upgrade.

Wheel fell off, disc dragged on road until stopped??
I'd say yes it will throw the balance out, but I've been wrong before.

I wouldn't use a rotor that has sustained that much damage.
I bet if you had it crack tested it would look like a spiders web.

I had a front wheel come off at 80km/hr + and the disc got ground down far more than that.
It scared the shit out of me but the impact of the disc hitting the road was fairly insignificant, I doubt it would crack it. I didnt bother changing the disc until it was worn out, no noticable run-out or effect on braking

I might fit it and see how it feels, If its not good ill rip it off again, its pretty thick material i would be suprised if it was structurally damaged but its a good point worth considering.

Rotors hit the ground bin it
could catch on the caliper and or could shatter

I can't believe you're even considering using it for the price a new disc would cost. Bin it and get a new one.

But hey, its only brakes, not like its a safety issue or anything.

Thats why people ask, because they dont know. The pads dont contact that area so as long as the disk is not going to shake or likely to be faulty then i wasnt sure if it would matter.

Im still not convinced that it wouldnt be safe, but i will take the advice and not use them.

If its not a good idea then thats ok, its why I asked.

unfortunatley mate the easest way to find out is when it shatters and you go crashing over a cliff hopefully with out any family members in the car and as you crash down the bank in a fire ball thinking thank god i saved $200 not buying new rotors

Brakes and steerings are the two things 0on your car you dont mess around with.

If something looks suss, assume it is and replace it.

ok new question, seeing as I had thought i was going to be upgrading my brakes and now they are on the scrap heap, (anyone want 1 good single disk )

Is there much to be gained by having ventillated disks like these over the standard solid rotors?

Apologies if I was too harsh, perhaps I could have made my point a little more politely.

The rotor pictured is rusted, pitted and very likely to be warped from the impact and being dragged along the road. The only way I would even consider using it is after having it machined and even then you'd have to twist my arm (they actually look like they have a decent lip on them so I wouldnt be surprised if they were under minimum thickness anyway.

Advantage of vented over solid rotors is heat dissipation. I would imagine that by upgrading from solid to vented discs you would also be changing the calipers to suit. Good chance the vented calipers will have more/bigger pistons which will be the main improvement you will notice with more clamping pressure, as long as your master cyl is up to it.

vented are well worth it.

Yep they came with bigger calipers too which is the main reason I was keen to put them in. as far as i know they work well with the std master cylinder.

Go with Slotted vented.. not cross drilled.
MUCH MUCH better...

Great idea, shop around and you should pick them up for well under $100 each. Slotted will cost more if you are keen.

IM not on the brakes that much that i think its worth while for daily stuff, but when im towing trailers around and down into places like kangaroo valley there is potencial for some damn hot brakes. although being diesel and having electric trailer brakes does help.

Slotted is the way to go
If you were in melbourne i would of sorted them out for you
