Curious GQ trait

I have something going on with my daily driver, a GQ 1991 TB42 carbie 5 speed.
The speedo works every now and then and drops out randomly, if however, I'm decellerating in gear like coming up to a set of lights and while i'm decellerating the speedo happens to drops out then a number of things happen, the engine brakes (compression) alot more noticeably and it also pops/rumbles out the exhaust. If the speedo then kicks back in while i'm still decellerating it will go back to normal, the engine braking will just be normal and the popping out the exhaust goes away.
Its done this for the two years i've owned it, i dont consider it a problem, more of a curiosity.
but does anyone know whats going on?
