Speedo is waaaaay out!!!

Post by Going_up »

i'm a little cunfused...

i bounght a my lux not too long ago and thought i was driving too fast everywhere.
any, decided to put the gps into her last night and noticed the speedo was 15km's out startin @ 40km/h

so if i was doing 55km/h on the speedo i was actualy doing 70 ish..

it got me really confused cause it's only got 31's on her. they only think that i might think it is, is that she had a grar box change. but i can't think that would change anything??
diff's are standard, that i know of...

well if the speed drive has been calibrated for 35's it would be very close to the speed the speedo is showing

31's to 35's is only a 13% change so 6.5km at 50kph.

and hiluxs tend to overstate their speed normally, so once you go to 33's they are pretty much spot on.

it could still be the issue but its seems too far out. what modle lux is it?

it's a 1993 dual cab 2.8 oil burner ln106.

it's got me buggered why ti's out.

my only guess is that the diff centers have been changed

i dont think diff centers would change it 20 k at 50kph. (it should read 3-8k's higher then the speed you really doin)

Maybe put what revs you are doing at 100kph by the GPS not the speedo. Should be able to tell if it is gears or the speedo then. It should have an electronic pick-up not cable driven speedo in it. I think Marks make a box to adjust them.

To give you an idea my 92 LN106 is 7kph out at 100 so just over 90 on the speedo is 100kph. That is on 33's

doesnt make sence at all. unless your running like 3.1 diffs it would not put your speed that far over, as they are normally slower than indicated not faster.

my 4.3 diffs 2.8 ln 106 sits on 2450 at indicated 100km/h on 31's

It could be a faulty speedo, as in something inside the chip is sick, but even then i would have thought it would just stop working.

sounds like its set up for 4.88s then or lower.

I do 2900- 3000 at 120 so your diffs are still stock 4.3's, but the speedo thinks you have 4.88s or even 5.1s.

it must have a correcter box in it somewhere which was set up for a previous life.

just to confirm though, is it 20km out the whole way up? or 20% it should be % to be a gearing issue.

if it is 20%

then 4.88's will bring you back to 6% out. but on the dangerous side.

going to 33s will kick it back up to 12% out.

still cant get my head around why its so far out.

the differance gets bigger the faster i go.

starts at about 10km out at 25km/h and keeps going up from there

dont worry, it's got me beat too

Are we sure the GPS is not out. I have been told that the speed they show can be very incorrect.

Ussually gps's are relatively close, navmans etc i wouldnt expect to be 100% though.

My Garmin gps is almost spot on.

Mine does 2900-3000 at 100 by the gps in 5th with 31s and 4.88s
2400-2500 at 100 by gps with 35s and 4.88s

I dont know, i have nothing haha.

well at least if its ever increasing with speed we know it is gearing related .

the differance gets bigger the faster i go.

starts at about 10km out at 25km/h and keeps going up from there

I believe my Tom Tom GPS is out. As my Hyundai speedo says Im at 100 the GPS says I am at about 93. I have not really checked but based on the rest of the traffic the speedo seems correct.

Its a 2000 Hyundai so I wouldn think that it would be out by that much mind you it is a Hyundai.

The difference sounds normal.

hyundais are one of the worst for speedo inaccuracy, all speedos standard read as faster than they actually are, so they can never be blaimed for tickets and high speed accidents etc.

GOING Up you need to talk to this guy. he needs your probelm and you need his
