HELP Fuel Delivery Problems in the lux

Hi Guys,
Fixed the weird battery/starting problem (well it hasn't come back yet).
But now,
I just tried to drive back from work, and the truck seems like it is not
getting any fuel?? It started OK at 8:30PM, I warmed it up for 5 mins,
then drove about 800M and the thing spluttered like crazy, stalled, I got it started from pumping the hell out of the accelerator while turning the key, but then it conked out about 50M later!!
Other than a blocked fuel filter, which I am going up to check now, what
else could it be? Any other roadside tests I can do to determine the fuel
delivery issue??
Really need to get it working for a small Stocktons mission planned for
this weekend!
Cheers,
Bart

Yeah Tris,
I definately want to come, but the trucks not keen for it.
Found out what the problem was, my fuel pump aint pumping shite!
After a few tests last night, I found that after pumping the accelerator
the motor was not getting the fuel, AND the fuel filter was not getting
any more fuel into it after I emptied it out.
Realising this would not be an easy fix, I had it towed to Chatswood,
turns out my Fuel Pump is stuffed, needs a new one. Have been quoted
at $180 for the job, is this good??
So now, including the $70 tow fee, I'm in the hole for $250!
But the luxie SHOULD be going for the weekend mission. Fingers Crossed.

Well, some bad news,
They have replaced the fuel pump with a new unit.
BUT it's still not pumping fuel!!!! Mechanic is trying to
find the problem now...
Might not be going to Stocktons after all

You sir have a blocked fuel line ... blow it out with a bit of compressed air ...

Take the fuel line off at the fuel filter and blow in it back down the line towards the tank, take the filler cap off first. See if this works at all.
I know with my lux once about every 6 months it will die the same way you discribed and all I do is blow back down the fuel line and it clears the problem and is good for another 6 months or so. I have been meaning to remove the fuel tank and clean it out but I forget about it untill it does it again
Owell want have to worry about it now as I am putting a different tank in it before it is on the road again.

if you drop ur tank out i think u can easily remove the pickup. just pull it out and see if theirs any shit blocking it and try what the other guys said bout blowing air up the line towards the tank.
If you cant drop it out urself me and ryan may be able to come up tomorra arvo to give u a hand.

just found some more info!! Dad reckons on most tanks hes seen (hes never seen a lux one) there is a ring on top of da tank where your lines go into the tank. push and turn on that locking ring and it should come out.
So ill see you at stockton heh....
or ill be
and
!!!

nearly all tanks i have seen have ther fuel pickup/sender unit on top of the tank, remove this, on the pick up, normally there is a strainer at the bottom of the pipe that runs to the base of the tank, it is a steel mesh strainer, and hardly anyone thinks to check these after they have checked evryewhere else, its always a possibility........good luck........

cable ties...don't leave home without em.
I REALLY want to come along, have been hanging to go for a run
up there for ages. Will get the sand-board out for a burn too!!
Just gotta get my car sorted cause I really need it running for
the drive up to Jeremys house next week for the new bar-work.
It should be running for the weekend. I hope.
Will update on sitch tommorrow.
Rorza,
mate I've already replaced the fuel pump, so after I do the pickup, it should be sweet as the actual tank itself seems fine, but if I need a new
tank you will be the first person I call.

Bart

Update...
Went and picked up the truck in my lunchbreak,
Paid the dude his $180 for the new fuel pump and filters,
she started first go, and drove OK, but when I got it down the
street about 1-2 kms, she spluttered and stopped again!!!
I bootie-fabbed a jerry can with a hose in it onto the inlet of
the fuel pump and it worked fine!! Drove all the way back to the
mechanic shop fine!!! This is starting to piss me off a bit.
Spesh cause we are supposed to be wheelin' this weekend!
Anyone got ANY other ideas. Had the mesh thingy on the bottom
of the pickup replaced, the lines have been blown with compressed air.
Anything else???
Cheers,
Bart

OK so you bootie'd up a tank and it ran fine, how full was your petrol tank ? cos it may well have a blocked vent (to let air in as fuel gets used up) Had this happen on the olds MQ patrol many years ago ... may be worth a look as well ...

Hey Toyo Truck when your 4by starts dieing & splutters do you have to keep pumping the throttle constantly to keep it running?????????
I had this problem on my 85 4-runner & it pissed me off, would be fine for a while then all of the sudden it would happen again (6 month of it).
I replaced fuel filters, checked fuel pump/lines, replaced my old dissy with a late model electronic one still no luck.
Wasn`t until my alternator shit itself I had the auto electrician check out my wiring, they ended up rewiring the bulk of the engine bay & haven`t had a proplem since so it may be a wiring thing????

Yeah Daas,
Maybe you are right. I hope not, that sounds expensive.
It really feels like a problem with the carby though.
New fuel pump, new fuel lines, cleaned pickup, 1/2 tank of optimax
and it goes allright for awhile, then splutters and dies.
BIGTIME flat spot from 1000 to about 1400 RPM too.
I'm thinking a carby rubild may be the next way to go.
Would running carby cleaner through it help any??
Anyone done a rebuild on a carby for a 22R?? How much roughly to do,
does anyone know a good carby place in Sydney??
Cheers,
Bart

OK, thought I was over this but perhpas not
SAGA UPDATE:->
Got the carby rebuilt, car WAS running much better all round.
Drove it round for a week or so without an issue.
Bout a week ago,
Decided it was time to wheel it, called up Dan and went to Menai.
Drove fine all day, the hard line up 80 series on 3 wheels and everything.
Came round to Prado Hill. Went to drive it, got up the first 2 steps,
then hit the 3rd a few times, then on final attempts, the car started to
die majorly under throttle (almost like it was out of gas altogether)!!
Reversed back down and went up in Dans shorty
And back down again
IMPORTANT BIT:->
Drove my POS all the way back home
Drove around OK (not as good as after the rebuild) for a bit,
then started to splutter up hills. AND Fuel guage will not leave
1 quarter even after I filled it? The other night I was driving up
Epping Road, and she splutters and dies hardcore.
Had done 170KMs since fill, Would not start?
Took off air assemb. tipped fuel in carby 3 times.
Car starts, splutters, dies.
THEN, I poured 20L into the tank, she started!!
Filled it right up to full, have been driving around ever since OK??
AND fuel guage now seems to work??
Can anyone help me with this issue? ANY advice would be great
cause this sux bigtime
Cheers,
Bart
