Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Heyyas.

The patrol needs some better tyres so I had a look at our tyre shop at work and noticed we are a Maxxis dealer.

I have got some prices and am really impressed with the cost of them.

I am looking to find out what peoples experiences are with them.

I am leaning more towards the Big Horns or the Mudzillas.

They will most likely become the 'second' set of tyres, keeping the 31's for daily work and these new ones for weekends of fun.

The issue I have with the Mudzillas is they only come in 13.5 inches wide in the 33 or a 35, which I think will be too wide for the troll.

I really want 35's but I think 33's would be more sensible.

I have a 3 inch suspension lift and no body lift and rims will be 15X8 Black Tracks in cruiser offset.

What are your thoughts on the Big Horns? They look simmilar to my Wrangler MTR's I currently have.

I think its a waste of time running muddys as a second set of tires....
maybe centipedes, claws, swampers etc you run as a second set, then run MT's as dailys.

Its not so much the tread, but the diamater. the Diesel is slow enough as it is. It can only be worse turning 35's in the traffic. Which is why I am thinking about keeping the 31's as dailys and the larger tyres for the weekends.

maxxis trepadores are awesome tyres for a set of muddies

Maxxis creepy crawlers are a great tyre I run 35" on my Cherrokee, dont think i'd run them on a daily driver though. I think your spot on about running a smaller tyre then changing them when you go wheeling, pia though

The trepadores are also looking good. In 35" there is about $50 per tire seperating them all.

The concern I have is, to fit 35's I will need to do more work to the car, a lot more work, 33's should fit fine as it is, but, 33's only give me an inch more ground clearance! Tough decisions.

I saw the creepy crawlers, but I was not sure if they were too soft in the sidewalls for road work. I still have to drive to wherever I am going 4bying.

dont know much about trols but couldn't you just extend ur bumpstops so that the 35s come too far up into your gaurd?

creepys are very strong/hard sidewalls, 4ply on 15 psi the side wall still stands straight

Heaps of stuff available....Interco do a great tyre called the LTB. It comes in 34 10.5 15 (great inbetween size) and new sizes available soon in the LTB.....35 12.5 15/16/17.......these are bias ply tyres and suitable only for weekend offroading.

BTW....Maxxis Creepys are really a small 35 (because of the crowning of the tread). These would fit with a 3" spring and no body lift.

according to the accurate manufacturers site, the min rim for all but 1 creepy is 10inch, and the 12.5 is actually 13inch wide :( so there goes 99% of people 8inch rims.

Yep, I have a 35 Creepy here that I just measured (It is brand new, but not mounted on a wheel) and it only measures 33 inches from the outside tread lugs across. When they are fitted and pumped up the crowning effect of the tyre makes the centre of the tread higher therefore creating a higher profile. I've had several sets of Creepys when I had my Hilux and I think they are an exceptional tyre.

As stated above get a real set of off road tyre not just basic muddys if you're gunna have roadies, as you'll get lazy and wont swap them over where as if you get a decent biased ply play tyre..... They handle like crap on road so you'll want to change but they're awesome off road, where you want them!!!
I own two sets of play tyres at the moment and have run several others but Swampers work best for me. My new Jungle trekkers are good in mud but aren't real good on rock. Also these are tall tyres for there size. 33 Swampers are taller than most 33 (including Claws, MTRs, Maxxis and more) The JT's are 34 and are slightly taller then my Swampers.
Save and do it you wont regret it. By the way I have a 88 GQ wagon so if you want more info regarding fit just pm. happy to help!!

Measured mine before, they are a fraction under 34"

I had a set of 33" Bighorns on my 60 and loved them, the guy who owns it now reckons they are great as well. I got them fairly cheap because we sell Maxxis at work. I know have a set of 35" Trepadors (radials not bias) for my GU but haven't used them yet as I haven't fitted the suspension. I did put some on a mates Sierra and they seemed really good, quiet on the road and excellent off it.

I run 33' mudzillas on 8inch rims.

i second the trepadors i had them on my old rig and they were unbeliveably good if i was goin to pick a mt again it would be them but im not im going to peads now

I read the new 4wd action mag and saw there is a big Mud tyre test. The Big Horns did really well but the tyre that stood out was the silverstones. So I rang our silverstone supplier at work for a price and they are out of stock for a couple of months!

anyone have a scanned copy they can send me of that mud tyre test?

Well, I decided to go 33 inch big horns and just run them as my everyday tires.

I got 5 tyres and new 15x8 LC offset rims, look tough as, I now have to get my flares back on as they stick way out of the guards!

They are really quiet which is a bit of a shock, and drive really good on the road, very pleased.

It now just needs a little more lift and she is ready for battle!

They will get a bit louder with age, but nothing too bad. My boss had a set in 265s on his Hilux that were noisy as anything, dunno what was going on there...
